Default 3 cylinder m44 converted to 328i

My friend over revved his m44 on the downshift (a lot) causing the piston to come through the block so it was time to fit a 328i engine. pretty straight forward to do. I made up solid engine mounts as the car has an impreza steering rack and the standard engine mounts no longer fit.
It runs really well and sounds fantastic. He is very pleased with it and is a lot more gentle on the downshift

If I have an OBD2 M44, which motors (outside of the S52/S54) are the most compatible swap in? m52Tub28? M54b30?

i have only fitted e36 engines into other e36 cars (plus some e30s but that is more work with the sump, engine mounts and electrics) and they are pretty straight forward. the later engines get more complicated
