Default 1995 318Ti Sport

Hi,

I’m the original owner of late 95 BMW 318ti Club Sport Manual with 156K.
The late model 95 sport had some 96 components as factory and upgraded suspension. Has a sunroof.

Car is located in Berkeley, CA and I’m asking $2300. It has a clean title which is in my possession.

This car has been incredibly reliable and has never broken down on me and still runs smooth. Has a new starter and battery and the back tires are still very good.

The engine and manual transmission runs perfectly.

Engine mounts were replaced maybe 5 years ago. (was trying to eliminate some noise which ended up being something else..)

Needs new lower front ball joints, so it can't drive over 40. Not sure I even want people test driving it..

Slow coolant leak somewhere. I did have the radiator replaced maybe 9 years ago along with a bunch of hoses and various engine parts as preventive maintenance.

Never been in any collisions, though I ran over a hitch from a SF MUNI street car that was just laying on the street back in like 1997 and the dealership replaced everything they could because of insurance, new rear wheel (because it was scratched..) and a repair under the back seat driver side. Not sure if that counts as an accident..

Driver seat is in need of upholstery and stuck in recline position.

Ceiling material needs replacement.

Both driver/passenger exterior door mechanisms don’t open from outside. Currently have to climb in through the hatch to open a door.

Interior Door panels have been removed, but in good condition.

Sunroof works, but the rubber gasket has shrunk and not seating correctly, so is interfering with opening. Needs to be replaced for that to operate again.

Rust spot on rear driver side quarter panel around antennae (size of fist now maybe) and a spot near roof on same panel.

Rear bumper paint on plastic fading. Overall the paint is in very good condition considering it’s age.

I’ve replaced the rear hatch shocks a few times. They currently are still working.

I thought I’d try and sell this car here first, since I’ve used this forum for research over the years.

Pictures coming...

Chassis number AM53480
Vehicle code CG53
Series E36
Model 318ti ( 318ti M42 )
Body type compact
Catalog model USA
Production date 1995 / 09
Engine M42
Transmission Manual
Steering Left
Catalyzer YES

Let me know if you have any questions. I’m not interested in parting it out myself.

Thanks, Jim

Welcome! When you say "needs a front end," do you mean tie rods, tires, brakes...??

Thank you No, the front wheels/tires and maybe rods are OK. Probably the tie rod ends are worn. It drives fine under 40. When it was up on the lift there was a lot of play in the wheels when you turned it by hand. I was trying to get rid of the shake so I got all the tires rebalanced a few months ago, but that was not it. I'm not a mechanic, beyond the simple stuff.

I'm guessing it could also need wheel bearings, maybe ball joints. Curious to see the rust spot on the rear quarter panel. Bubbles don't happen that easily here in CA.

Cool car and the red mill point interior is desirable. However, given that huge rust spot and all the issues which basically make the car un-drivable this is going to need a bunch of work. I don’t see anyone paying anywhere near 4800 for this. Just my opinion - good luck

It just needs lower front ball joints and probably a new radiator to be perfectly drivable. I dropped it to $4200. I'm putting it on craigslist soon. I'll see what happens...

Seems like a better price. I wish I had the time and $ to deal with that antenna area spot. I’ve never seen it like that.

There is another black 96 ti for a $1000 on craigslist in sfbay now. The front looks totaled, but it's black and has a rear quarter panel...
