Default Secondary Air Pump

Is it possible not to have one of these? I have been looking and unless its directly underneath the air box out of view, I don't know where else it could be. I have read that its supposed to be under the hose leading into the intake, but the only thing under it is the alternator. I'm still having issues under the hood, and the crankcase vent valve doesn't seem to ever shut up, its always hissing, and the car still will not start on the first try (when engine is cold). Does anyone know EXACTLY where the pancake shaped air pump is?

I also noticed that after the first crank (when its cold, the car will try to turn on but will sputter out without fail), the ICV makes a whirring noise. Is this normal? The key was left in the on position after it sputtered out. Not sure if its trying to keep the car idling or if the ICV has gone bad. Does anyone have any ideas?

Not sure what year your car is but if you have 1995 with the M42 engine it doesn't have a secondary air pump.

Its a 96 sport. I have done a search on the subject, and the pictures that I have seen showing the placement of their secondary air pump aren't accurate in comparison to my car. It was built in 5/96 if that helps anyone. I looked on real oem, didn't help much.

Here's what it looks like and it's located directly under your MAF:

I don't have whats in that picture. There is a long cylindrical black can with two hoses coming out the top and one out the bottom going to some little valve perhaps that has an electrical plug right next to it, but I don't have the big pancake looking thing where everyone says its supposed to be. I just took some pictures, I will try to edit my post and add them in. Its very strange. Also, I haven't heard anything about the crankcase vent valve and why it is so loud all of the time.

I have a 96 sport as well and as far as I can tell I don't have secondary air either...mine looks just like yours does in the pics.

the secondary air pump send air to the exhaut manifold when the caris turn on in cold to heat fast the oxigen sensors to fast respond and no check engine ligth, when i have my Ti i eliminate those system to install my custom supercharger, i have no issues but i live in Puerto Rico , here the temp is 80 to 110 degree all year , so i think my car not need the air pump here. So i think if youy eliminate yours probably have bad turn on and check engine light, but the engine run normal witout those gigant pump

I'm only interested in finding the air pump (if I actually have one). I get the feeling that my crankcase vent valve has gone bad because its consistently hissing, however I don't know how to diagnose that issue. Any ideas out there?

well, the airpump is under the air cleaner, in the side panel, drive side, is tach to the air cleaner by a hose to clean the air to the pump, the air pump not have nothing in comon with your cranckse valve problem, because the air pump send air direct to the exhaut manifold.

UPDATE: 90% of the problem was the crankcase vent valve. It had gone bad, causing lumpy idle, loud whining noise, and poor fuel mileage. I replaced it yesterday and I forgot how quiet my car was supposed to be. It still doesn't start on the first try, but I'm just happy not to have everyone tell me that my belts need changing.

FYI: To check you crankcase vent valve, if you pull off your oil cap and there is no change in the car's idle, most likely it has gone bad. If the valve is hissing alot, it has probably gone bad.
