low average gas mileage

I have some questions about what I feel is extremely low gas mileage for my 318ti. I know there are other threads with the same problem, but I have also come to the realization that most people on this site drive manuals, and unfortunately (for right now) my car is an automatic, it is a 1995 318ti with 111,XXX miles on it. I just changed my brakes today, and before the brake change, I was in the 18-20MPG range (mostly city), then after I changed my brakes I took my car for a drive, I checked the OBC and the AMPG dipped from 19.5 to 15.3, then slowly climbed up and stayed at 17.2.


What should I change in my car to optimize AMPG? and also, why does the OBC say my AMPH is 25.7 when I hardly ever drive under 45MPH. WTH?!?

Have you cleared the computer lately?

I reset the mileage about every 5 tanks the city driving kills the average mileage display for accuracy as far as I can tell.

The average speed calculator on the OBC is always ticking away so even sitting at stop lights gets factored into your average speed. This effectively destroys what you may think your average speed is.

and I clear the computer by holding the S/R and clock button at the same time?

Mine clears with just the S/R button hold it for about 8 seconds.

I use the average speed indicator for TSD rallys...
