If you disconnect the plugs at the back of the dash/speedo bit,Then change the bulb marked by a symbol resembling odo.Reconnect the plugs the odo light will stay on untill the ignition is turned off then on.For some reason it stays on once you connect the blue plug!(if the plugs are the same colour for uk models and usa that is)when the black plug goes in it gets a little dimmer but as you say it does stay on i solved mine by turning the ignition off then on.
Iwould recommend high brightness LED's as they brighten the whole dash up.
