I just got my car last week, its a '96 318ti with an M44. My car has 170,000+. I also changed the spark plugs to Bosch Platinum Iridium's (are these ok?). As I was driving one day and came to a stop at a red light my idle started acting up...it droped from 900 to about 600 and was fluctuating in between. The check engine light came on and when i ran it on the OBD Scanner it said Cylinder 1-Misfire, Cylinder 2-Misfire...and so on until cylinder 4. I also hear a whistle from the motor at low RPM, but when applying a little bit of gas it goes away until the RPM drops again. Is it possible you damaged the plug wires when you changed the spark plug? Cracks in the plug wires could cause a misfire and may not be immediately apparent. __________________ 318ti, sport, hellrot, 05/95 Munich, Germany | | | 12-29-2006, 02:01 PM | #3 | doesn't care about you. Plz Help Me! | Check for cracks in the rubber boots after the air filter. This seems to be a pretty common problem. __________________ '99 Dinan M3 | | | 12-29-2006, 07:12 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2006 Location: Charlottesville, VA Posts: 234 | Bad PCV valve can cause a whistle. Search for info on that, or you can run the car and spray the area with carb cleaner to see if the idle smooths out. Common failure item in addition to the intake boot. Also, we almost never run Bosch Platinum plugs in any BMW unless that is what the factory uses. Go with the original equipment plugs. -Paul | | | 12-29-2006, 07:36 PM | #5 | NOBODY F's with the Jesus Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Ventura California Posts: 7,824 | Quote: Originally Posted by DustenT Check for cracks in the rubber boots after the air filter. To do a quick fix, remove the boot and seal with epoxy. Replace asap. You will most likely need to remove the boot to find the split as they tend to tear along the ribs. After repair and reseting the OBDII, misfire codes went away. | | | 12-30-2006, 11:26 AM | #6 | Member Join Date: Dec 2006 Location: SFV Posts: 36 | I checked the rubber boot from the MAF to the air filter compartment, its not that. I also notice the water temperature gauge fluctuate from right after the blue to half, but never passing the half. I put the original spark plugs back in, and still the same.
