Canada Posts: 96 | Custom "Short" Shift Knob I had an old knob from a junked ti and I decided to experiment a little with it... Here is a before shot : The stock knob is way too long to even look good .... So i decided to cut a piece off. I started by cutting the threads off the leather, peeled the leather upwards and then I busted out my hacksaw and I cut off a 1" piece off the knob... Then I removed the Shift pattern then I unscrewed the big screw and got rid of all the junk inside of the knob... Now is the fun part ..... Take your drill and a 1/2" bit and drill a hole thru the knob, starting from the bottom opening... This will leave your knob looking something like this : __________________ 1995 Canadian Spec Schwarz II Ti Base Model.... 5spd, Untinted Windows, Bilstein Sports, Bav Auto Springs, E36 Sport Wheels, 225/50 Fuzion HRi's, MK3 Jetta VR6 Front Lip, Cosmos Racing Short ram intake, Luk Clutch kit, Apexcone projectors, DDM 6000K HID, Shortened shift knob, Pioneer stereo, Autopage Alarm Last edited by al95ti; 04-15-2011 at 06:28 PM. | | | 11-13-2006, 04:01 AM | #2 | Member Join Date: Nov 2005 Location: Shediac, N.B. Canada Posts: 96 | Continued...... (6 pics rule) After this step... go in your car...remove your knob (put in 2nd and pull out straight)... and then stuff this bad boy on your shifter... It should look like this Then get some heavy gauge solder or wire and roll it around the shifter inside the knob.... This fills up the empty space and adds a little weight to the knob. Put your shift pattern back on and Voilΰ you have a short knob... Here is a comparison of the 2 knobs Left is Stock Right is "Short" EDIT : In my opinion it reduces the throw a little bit and I feel it shifts better and it looks 1000X better than stock... __________________ 1995 Canadian Spec Schwarz II Ti Base Model.... 5spd, Untinted Windows, Bilstein Sports, Bav Auto Springs, E36 Sport Wheels, 225/50 Fuzion HRi's, MK3 Jetta VR6 Front Lip, Cosmos Racing Short ram intake, Luk Clutch kit, Apexcone projectors, DDM 6000K HID, Shortened shift knob, Pioneer stereo, Autopage Alarm Last edited by al95ti; 04-15-2011 at 06:29 PM. | | | 11-13-2006, 04:08 AM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: Central NJ Posts: 2,440 | Did you re-sew the knob? | | | 11-13-2006, 04:08 AM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2006 Location: Philly, PA Posts: 189 | I like. | | | 11-13-2006, 04:11 AM | #5 | Member Join Date: Nov 2005 Location: Shediac, N.B. This is the main reason I did this, because my other knob was slipping... Thanks for the comments guys.... More chance for error. That is why I took off my sparco knob and re-installed my factory knob. If you like it keep it though. | | | 11-13-2006, 02:59 PM | #12 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2005 Location: Puerto Rico Posts: 885 | i like , look cool __________________ BMW...MY NEW TOY Mods: Some plastic parts, ///M Wheels and me | | | 11-13-2006, 06:59 PM | #13 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2004 Location: Manassas, VA Posts: 4,129 | My Momo knob sits about the same height, and I love it.
