I've been involved with racing for the last 9 years or so, and I've never looked at owning a BMW before. I got hooked doing some ice racing on frozen lakes here in Colorado, progressed on to auto-x, track days, some HPDE and then found my real interest...getting dirty. For the last two years I've been hillclimbing an Evo, and I'm looking to move into stage rally, and after doing some extensive youtube searching ( bmw rally footage), a BMW is one of my top choices. RWD, good powerplants available, and no turbos to blow up every weekend. I'm not a big fan of cars with big overhang, so I'm looking at picking up a 3-series to transform into one of these beauties. I'd suggest you look for a '95 ti since they are OBDI and have the M42, easier to mod/swap if you desire. __________________ ~Dave~ 98 328ti Morea Grun slicktop 11 128i space gray slicktop 13 JGC WK2 Deep Cherry Search | RealOEM | | | 10-21-2009, 09:05 PM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2009 Location: Denver Posts: 373 | Quote: Originally Posted by spidertri I'd suggest you look for a '95 ti since they are OBDI and have the M42, easier to mod/swap if you desire. | Thanks for the tip! Keeping things simple is key for me on the build, and reliability is the #1 goal. Can't tell you how many times I've seen a team tow 1000 miles only to have an engine or transmission problem crop up and take them out of the race. I need to keep researching engine options, but the rules for Rally America on a 2wd car are: Turbo/SC modifier 1.7 Ajdusted Displacement under 5100cc So, that lets me use up to a 3.0L engine if I want to go forced induction, or 5.1L if I stay N/A. Does anyone know of any resources that would list engine weights? Based on my prior experiences with high HP cars ( my Evo), I think power somewhere in the low to mid 300range should be plenty. Dave btw, when signing up for the forum, it recommended that I post an introduction in this forum...but after further looking around on the site I see there's a better spot for that. Sorry. | | | 10-22-2009, 05:45 AM | #6 | Member Join Date: Sep 2009 Location: San Jose,Ca Posts: 37 | Quote: Originally Posted by tiFreak welcome, if you're looking for a 318ti rally car I hear there's one for sale in Hungary, how expensive could the shipping be? not too many members on here using their ti's for rallying and stuff, I'm looking forwards to seeing a build thread | Ive seen that car! i randomly ended up in an ebay like website but they only thing they sold was rally cars, that thing looked mean as ****! i'll try to digg up some pictures... | | | 10-22-2009, 05:58 AM | #7 | Member Join Date: Sep 2009 Location: San Jose,Ca Posts: 37 | Found it!
