Scott,

Does you car have the pop up wind deflector? Some Cali's do; some don't. I've read that the deflector lessens the Cali's wind noise when the roof is open. I wonder if a plastic deflector like you see on some sun roofs would have a positive effect. Is the sound wind noise, or does the canvas make a flapping noise? I've read about the noise issue with Cali roofs. They look worth to me, though.

I have a 1996 with the cali roof. I only resently bought the car and was rear ended on the way to the court house to put plates on it. Anyhow in settling with the insurance company I had to really research the car as they thought it was worth about nothing. Anyhow, the cali. pkg. was an option only in 1996. It included the fancy sunroof as well as cruise, five spoke wheels, leather wraped steering wheel and shifter. They only came in the colors black or red. They also came standard with the cloth millpoints seats though you could order leather. None of the 96's had a wind deflector. In 97 on up the cali roof was an option but not a pkg. Mine appears to have all the goodies on her. Including the remote key fob for unlocking the doors - some places list this as standard for the cali pkg but bmw didn't. The factory alarm, the 6 disc changer, and limted slip dif. As for weather the cali roof or pkg is worth it I'm still up in the air, it looks cool but will I truly use it or just have a slight wind noise weather or not it's open or not.

I am reviving this 5 months after the last guy. Anyway I guess I have the standard sunroof, this is just metal and no glass right? And I do have A/C but didn't seem rare to me. The only thing not working on my sunroof is the one touch button forward, opening it is one touch but closing takes so much time gosh . I do like the sunroof and the option to pop it up has helped to keep my car cooler in the summer to without leaving windows down cause black cars get hott! I don't even know how I found this thread weird.

Very happy that I have a sunroof delete M-tech. Since I will be autoxing it, I need the lightest chassis possible. My '96 doesn't even have ACS. However, it is missing a LSD.

I have a 95 and a 97 with sunroofs and A/C. I also have a 98 Cali Sport with A/C. The top was broken when I purchased it and now it is working again! I'm a convertible guy from way back so the Cali suits me well.

I did not know there was a factory option for a pop up wind deflector on the Cali top. The wind noise with the side windows up is horrible. I added an after market deflector that helps some. Mostly I have the side glass down when the Cali is open and it's not an issue. Now if you want to talk water leaks down the A pillars- that's another issue. As one enthusiast said to me- it was meant to be used in CA and it does not rain there

Hi Scott! If you can find a 98-99 top they come with the deflector. I have a broken 98 roof that has a deflector I will be transferring to a 96 roof to have a spare.

Posting a few pics for folks who don't know what we are talking about.

It hasn't rained much in Cali lately, but I just ordered a new frame seal for when it eventually does. I figure after 10 years of service, a seal that large is going to leak somewhere. $98 at GetBMWparts.com.

When I pull the old top today, I'll take some deinstallation pictures as it is way easier than pulling a sunroof cassette. I can see why folks do Sunroof deletes as far as weight is concerned, as they are more then twice the weight of a Cali top.

I look forward to enjoying my California Top in California.
