Default VIN Decoding and Production #'s

I have two questions that really bother me.

1) How come no one has come up with a detailed breakdown of North American 318ti production numbers? I'd like to do some research on this topic to find out how many Base, Active, and Sport models there were, as well as how many of each color, and hopefully into some options as well, but that's pretty detailed. I really don't even know where to start.

2) Is there some kind of source online for one to "decode" their car's VIN? So they could know, for example, what model ti they own (I still am in the dark), and what number in the production run their car is.

I would ask BMW but judging by my previous dealings with them, I'd rather avoid the hassle.

Any insight would be great.

The total production numbers for each year are available online. I've seen them before, but I don't remember where. The colors, etc., are probably going to have to involve talking to someone at BMW NA. If it helps, all the '99 model year cars were sports, but there were only around 650 of them.
