Default Button?

My friend a 96 318i, and it had an m44 engine, e36 chassis. What we can't figure out is what one of the interior buttons does. It is to the left of the automatic shifter, by the window buttons and such. It is a rectangle, has a little crater type indention in the center, and you can press it and it clicks down, and you press it again and it clicks up.

We have messed around with it, but as far as we can tell, it doesn't do anything.

Anyone know what this is?

Do you need a picture?

Does it say ASC on it? :P

Yeah a picture would probably help...I have no idea what it is. If he bought it from a 3rd party person it could be an aux switch, like my friend installed a switch in his dash to flip on the lights for the subs in the back.

I don't have a power window lock. I do have a button that locks the doors.

we thought it was probably a window lock...but i noticed it didnt lock the windows. maybe it is supposed to but its broken...its an old car...and his A/M transmission switch is kinda broken...it will switch to M, but not back to A, the only way to get back to A is to turn the car off and re crank it...so it would be too far off to think this button is broken as well

What would be nice is having a two color LED on the door lock button, green and red. That way when it's locked it lights green, and when it's open it's red. I sometimes forget if I just locked the door when I get in at night. Instead of looking back at my door, hard to see in the dark, I could see the door lock button is green.

i'll either throw an elbow back to check if the lock is up/down, or hit the button again, and listen to the sound (it's different for up / down).

no clue what your button is for.

Nope.

W W
B a/m SK
W W

SK = Shift Knob
W = Window (Front left, front right, back left, back right)
a/m = Auto/Manual
B = Mystery Button!

That is my best diagram of the button. No text or anything. Retangle with a little dimplish crater. It pushes straight down and clicks. Push it down again, and it clicks and comes back up.

Hmm....keeps messing up my spacing on my text diagrams...

Looks like a window lock. My friend has the same one on his 97 318is...4 door. So yeah. But that doesnt make sense, you said he has a 318i? If his is 4 door its most likely a window lock. If not, then it might just be there for no reason. Or it could be a window lock but be broken. I have no idea.
