Redoing the shift lever in my car and thinking of fabbing something similar to UUC's DSSR ("double shear selector rod"). Seems a decent idea to limit slop. What do people think that may have tried them (seems they don't have on listed for a 318ti)? If I make one I plan on matching the "bent" geometry of the factory selector rod, just need some appropriate stainless - to save on materials I'll make it out of 3 pieces silver brazed together. paul | | | 10-15-2011, 11:37 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2010 Location: Potomac Falls VA DMV Posts: 1,794 | Ive got one on my ZF tranny. The work was done by Motorspeed West in Santa Clara, CA. They only work on BMW and Mercedes. I'm glad I had them do it because they said some of the drivetrain parts had to be modified for a clean installation. Something about two screws that were supposed to be in and some sort of weight on the driveshaft that needed to be taken off. I just drove it for a bit and everything works smoothly now. __________________ Trixie Alpine White 1996 BMW 318ti Sport | | | 03-17-2012, 02:07 AM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2008 Location: Los Angeles, CA Posts: 1,464 | Quote: Originally Posted by jggonzalez I just had the UUC Motorwerks SSK with DSSR installed on Trixie. Those weights are there for a reason, y'know... | | | 03-17-2012, 03:14 AM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Elizabeth City, NC Posts: 3,877 | People have said the vibration damper can come off the driveshaft with no ill effects. Mine was pressed on so I didn't bother. Can't run a "stock" dssr with the damper on there as they will interfere. I'm planning on making some custom pins and weighted selector rod for my car once I get around to it. Need to order a new rod joint still. __________________ ~Dave~ 98 328ti Morea Grun slicktop 11 128i space gray slicktop 13 JGC WK2 Deep Cherry Search | RealOEM | | | 03-20-2012, 05:12 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2011 Location: Fremont, CA Posts: 148 | Quote: Originally Posted by zoner Did they re-balance the driveshaft? The shop is an independent shop that works only on BMW and Mercedes, so I'm sure they know what they are doing. Still, I appreciate the heads up. I'll ask them and see what they say. __________________ Trixie Alpine White 1996 BMW 318ti Sport | | | 03-20-2012, 06:00 PM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2007 Location: Fl Posts: 1,353 | I have one on my Z3 coupe... it is insanely heavy and shifting is notchy. For most, a set of fresh bushings and washers will make a world of shifting difference. __________________ SUPPORT 318ti.org! CLICK THE LINK ABOVE! No problems from it. There are also many E30 guys who simply take their vibration dampers off and run without it, it used to be standard on the 4 and 6cyls. __________________ ~Dave~ 98 328ti Morea Grun slicktop 11 128i space gray slicktop 13 JGC WK2 Deep Cherry Search | RealOEM | | | 03-21-2012, 08:44 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2011 Location: Fremont, CA Posts: 148 | My mechanic said removing it wouldn't harm anything and that the DSSR couldn't be installed with it on there. I'm thinking that if I used the stock selector rod they might have been able to leave the vibration damper on, but it's done now. So far the shifting is great! Its a little stiffer than stock, but you get used to that quickly. __________________ Trixie Alpine White 1996 BMW 318ti Sport | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
