I turn the key and the lights/radio come on but that's it. The issue isn't the battery. There is no 'click click click' noise either. The engine literally never gets the 'message' to atleast try starting. Anyone have an idea what this could be? Thank you | | | 01-17-2009, 10:34 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: Oxford, Ohio Posts: 868 | Make sure it's not the battery. When mine went the lights and radio worked, but the car didn't click or turn over slowly like my other cars would. Try a jump start. Then try a roll start. If neither of them work... post a reply here. | | | 01-17-2009, 10:49 PM | #3 | Junior Member Join Date: Jan 2009 Location: Miami Posts: 13 | Dont think its the battery Dave, Cheers for the response. I don't think it's the battery. I did jump-start the battery and it really didn't change anything. It's like there's not a connection between the ignition and the engine ?? Not sure if it's the starter or maybe a connection into the starter perhaps. Appreciate your answers | | | 01-17-2009, 11:27 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: Memphis, Tn Posts: 1,299 | Did it run fine the last time it was on and running? I would say it is the starter. Check it out and see if you can see any visible problems like a connection or anything. Also have somebody try to crank the car while you watch and listen to the engine. Hope this helps some. __________________ custom dual exhaust,M3 front and rear bumper, 10.4 inch roof mount drop screen, Viper alarm system, DSII's rims, M3 Vader Seats, M3 Mirrors, Carbon Fiber CAI, Smoked Corners, Side Markers, Leatherz armrests, black grilles 225k miles and still the Ti goes on | | | 01-17-2009, 11:36 PM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2004 Location: Northern Michigan Posts: 867 | I bet you it's a fuse. Look for a blown 15 amp for the rear brakes. __________________ [SIGPIC][/SIGPIC] | | | 01-17-2009, 11:46 PM | #6 | Junior Member Join Date: Jan 2009 Location: Miami Posts: 13 | Starter &/or fuzes Guys appreciate the responses so far. I haven't had a chance to try these options (car is at work in a garage) but am going over there tonight. Should I just buy a new relay? Hoping that is the problem? How do I test to know if it's the relay, starter, or a fuze? I mean the fuze is relatively easy and cheep .... i guess same with the relay, huh? Anyone know exactly where the relay for the starter on a 95 318ti is? Thanks | | | 01-31-2009, 03:30 PM | #7 | Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: N.W. VT Posts: 33 | Electrical Problem Do you have a spare key? The problem you are having may be the computer chip (EWS) in the key. When I first got my car I had the dealer make up a spare key ($83), and it did not start the car. The dash lights came on but the starter did not work?? At first I thought weak battery because the car had been sitting, but when I used the key that came with the car it started fine. I took the key back to the dealer and they had to replace it, the chip was wrong?? They were not happy the replacement was on them. I have been using the replacement for a year and half no more problems. I would check the key first, electrical parts are usually not returnable. Hate to see you buy a relay and find out thats not the problem. I allways start with simple stuff first and work up from there. Good Luck. | | | 02-05-2009, 12:28 AM | #8 | Junior Member Join Date: Aug 2008 Location: Miami Beach Posts: 18 | Hi guys , i saw this tread and as the guy who started it i have 1998 318Ti and i am from Miami as well , and i also doesnt had the click sound i took it to BMW service since i dont understand nothing from cars and they told me that my both computers are burned because of leak from CAWL pretty much thats what their estimate is saying SERVICE / WORK REQUESTED PARTS IN STOCK LABOR SUB TOTALS APPROVED 7 DME COMPUTOR $1,339.00 8 EGS COMPUTOR $1,359.00 9 DME RELAY $30.00 10 CAWL PANEL ANS SEAL MODULE BOX $55.00 11 12 LABOR TO RESEAL COWL AND REPLACE MODULE BOX 13 WITH REPLACING DME , EGS , DME RELAY 5.8 $980.00 TOTAL $4,030.12 My question is what i should do? | | | 02-05-2009, 09:40 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: Memphis, Tn Posts: 1,299 | Quote: Originally Posted by bobytt Hi guys , i saw this tread and as the guy who started it i have 1998 318Ti and i am from Miami as well , and i also doesnt had the click sound i took it to BMW service since i dont understand nothing from cars and they told me that my both computers are burned because of leak from CAWL pretty much thats what their estimate is saying SERVICE / WORK REQUESTED PARTS IN STOCK LABOR SUB TOTALS APPROVED 7 DME COMPUTOR $1,339.00 8 EGS COMPUTOR $1,359.00 9 DME RELAY $30.00 10 CAWL PANEL ANS SEAL MODULE BOX $55.00 11 12 LABOR TO RESEAL COWL AND REPLACE MODULE BOX 13 WITH REPLACING DME , EGS , DME RELAY 5.8 $980.00 TOTAL $4,030.12 My question is what i should do? | I would say try to see how much it would cost if you buy the parts yourself and do the labor yourself. Could save you thousands. __________________ custom dual exhaust,M3 front and rear bumper, 10.4 inch roof mount drop screen, Viper alarm system, DSII's rims, M3 Vader Seats, M3 Mirrors, Carbon Fiber CAI, Smoked Corners, Side Markers, Leatherz armrests, black grilles 225k miles and still the Ti goes on | | | 02-05-2009, 09:43 PM | #10 | Junior Member Join Date: Aug 2008 Location: Miami Beach Posts: 18 | Quote: Originally Posted by Will'sBimmer I would say try to see how much it would cost if you buy the parts yourself and do the labor yourself.
