If u want your 316i faster your only choice is an engine swap. There are little things u can do to improve the 1.6 M43 , no DASC or such things. A 6 cyl swap would be your best choice.

I could have sworn I had read about a turbocharger for the 316i.

A quick Google search found this.

There is a turbocharger kit from Mosselman turbo, which takes the 316i to 150 ps. But with the same money you can convert to a 2.8l 6 cyl. M52.

Ok guys, i've looked at the options and i think i will have a better look at putting in a larger engine, although i do like the look of some of those mods. Thanks for your advice.

Engine Swap, may seem a better choice for the money, however, there are "hidden costs" that most people forget. Engine swaps, especially to 6cyl sizes; not only it the engine cost but also transmission and diff (if you want them to last a tad longer), suspensions (front and rear), brakes (front and rear), speedo/tach/gauges, exhaust (mufflers and cat), here stateside we have to be concerned with OBD1 or OBD2 systems for emissions, etc.
Good Luck....

I believe ti = Touring International...it was intended to connote something a little more "special" than the standard 316i Compact. In the U.S. and NA markets, the ti is also an indicator that the car is a Compact...

I looked into upgrades for my old red 316i - superchips supplied a chip for £400 that would give a massive 3bhp increase (it was about 15bhp for a 318ti)

if you're feeling real handy with with a wrench i saw a 316i in london where the guy had put in a whole E30 318ix 4 wheel drive system

from back in the day the 2002 tii - i think that's touring international Injection

The Ti used to imply a relationship to the touring car series didn't it? IE: Merkur Xr4Ti, 318Ti and I forget the Peugeot model number. Of course that dates back to the Orignal E30 ti... That had a turbo as well... one for sale on race-cars.com....

All of the above answers (including mine) are wrong....I was going from memory on my earlier response and I "anglicized" the true definition. Having been forced to get off my chair and actually look it up....

The "ti" term derives from the original BMW 1800TI of the 1960's. TI officially denoted "Turismo Internationale". Over the years, there have been other BMWs that carried the TI/Ti/ti designation, including the 1800TI/SA (SA=Sportausfaurung or sports version--a racing special version), 2000TI (version of 2000 sedan with dual side draft carbs), 2000tilux ("luxury" successor to the 2000TI), 2002Tii (fuel injected version of the 2002Ti), and more currently, the wagon (for us Yanks) and estate (for you Brits) versions of the 3 and 5-series cars, e.g. 325Ti (wagon version of the 325i). I can find no other BMW that has carried the "ti" designation (both letters being lowercase) except our beloved 318ti and 323ti E36 cars of the mid-late 1990's.

Now you REALLY know what ti stands for

The wagons are iT. Not TI. I have a 2003 525iT sitting in my garage next to my ti. Sweet car...
