Does anyone know if the exhaust needs to be dropped on the 318ti to change the guibo? On bf.c, it sounds like some people are getting it done without taking off the exhaust. Z3 guys mainly? Just wondering if it's possible for us, as I haven't had a chance to get under the car recently.

EDIT: I just got under my car and it looks like the guibo bolts are accesible without taking the exhaust off. The vibration damper on the transmission crossmember should probably come off, but that's just one simple bolt. Hopefully the driveshaft will push back far enough to get the guibo out.

Mine has some cracks, but it's not too terrible. I'll do a write-up in the spring.

I have replaced the guibo, you don't have to remove the exhaust to replace it.
Just loosing the six guibo bolts.

But replacing driveshaft bearing you have to remove the catalystor.

its a rubber donut at the front of the drive/propshaft. it dampens the shockwaves caused by the gearbox changing gear.

I just replaced my guibo today. I didn't have to remove the exhaust, but it didn't come out as easy as I thought it would. I had to yank out (literally) the heat shield above the exhaust to access the center bearing and remove its two nuts. I also had to take the four bolts off the cross brace that sits just aft of the center bearing. Removing this brace and unbolting the center bearing allowed the drive shaft to flex down enough to pull the guibo out.

Unfortunately the slight clunking I was getting when I let off the throttle at low speeds still is there. The drivetrain does seem more solid now though; just feels like a bit less slack.

How do you know if you need the Guibo replaced if you can't get under your car ?
Noise when shifting gears and disengaging the clutch ?
If so, how does it sound ? feel ?

in his 325ic and it was a nightmare and it breaks again the same day come to find out the guy at bav auto gave the wrong part we had to drop everything out of this car pain

I've recently added the Curt Mfg Trailer Hitch and decided to change the Guibo too...glad I did, it was cracked/dry. I did not remove the exhaust or vibration damper. I unbolted the heat shield (4 screws) and slid it as far rearward as possible...I too was tempted to rip it out of the way but resisted that urge successfully. The driveshaft slid back just barely far enough to slide the Guibo out.

The 6 Guibo bolts were not of the same age...the 3 on the trans side were shiny...the 3 on the driveshaft side were rusty. I suspect the engine/trans was removed recently by the previous owner...maybe cooling system work?

is this a guibo? this is what my car has and it fell a part. I'm trying to get an understanding of how it installs on top the shaft before I attempt it.
