Default Check Engine Light - Mass Airflow Sensor

Hey everyone. I recently got the cat and exhaust replaced on my 98 ti. Both are OEM. I was driving home from work in stop and go traffic and my check engine light came on.

When I took it to my mechanic he plugged in the scanner and the code was for
the Mass Air Flow Sensor. He told me it had to do with the gas possibly running too rich or too low. He reset the code and told me to notice anything different about my exhaust (thicker smoke or funny smell). At the time he told me that he didn't know what the problem was but that most likely my mass airflow sensor would have to be replaced but he wanted to wait and see if it happened again. He told me that I would just have to drive my car and make sure I notice the next time my check engine light goes on.

Could anyone shed some light on what this problem could be and maybe some things that I could check for?

Thanks

First, it's real easy to check if you have a faulty MAF, although this is not a definitive test; just unplug it, and see how your car runs. It it seems to run the same, then you probably have a faulty MAF. If it runs worse, your MAF MAY BE OK. If the car runs much better, your MAF is definitely history. Second, before you buy a new MAF, try cleaning the one you have, like THIS:http://www.louv.tv/cars/m5/MAF/

hope this helps.

Also, if you DO need a new MAF, check the Bosch serial number carefully, and then go to www.performancecafe.com. It's a VW site, but the MAF for the Golf IV has the same Bosch sensor part as a lot of BMWs. I bought one off them (much cheaper than BMW!) for my 535. Perfect!

Typically how much does a mass air sensor go for? Just curious.

BavAuto sells them for 389.95,. This as of 2 minutes ago

You could probably find a used one at a Junk Yard for cheaper...

At Performance Cafe the Bosch sensor (you have to unscrew it from the VW airpipe and fit it to the BMW pipe from your car) cost me $75. It had exactly the same Bosch part number as the one I took out of my BMW 535, for which the best price here in the U.K. was £184.
