I am having a loud squealing when the car idles. It doesn’t get faster or louder when you rev the engine and the noise disappears when driving but when you let off the throttle the loud squeal returns and constant. The belts are in good shape and the noise sounds more like brakes squealing but it make the squeal while stationary. I did a search but was unsuccessful finding an answer. It sounds like a bearing or something. Possibly a waterpump? A short piece of garden hose works well as a stethoscope. Perhaps you could narrow the sound to a particular pulley or area of the engine. It turned out to be the crankcase vent valve. I read on another thread to check if it was bad by just taking off the oil fill cap. As soon as I removed the cap the squeal stopped. I can't believe how much noise the bad one made; it sounded like brakes squealing constantly.
I bought a new vent valve(62.50) at the local dealership and installed it in about a hour. I just had the same problem on my '95ti Automatic! There was a loud squealing that sounded like one of the serpentine belts. But when I removed both belts, the squeal would continue. Removed the oil filler cap and it went away. Changed the crankcase breather (or vent) valve and the problem is solved! Who would have guessed? Thanks for this thread. Hi Ralliart,
I found the squealing occurred when the engine warmed up. But it really doesn't matter. Run the car and when the squealing starts, remove the oil filler cap. If the squealing goes away, Bob's Your Uncle! You need to replace the crankcase breather.

Yes, sounds like one of the pulleys. Remove the serpentine belt and make sure the squealing stops.
- If yes, see if you can determine which bearing has the most play - idler, alternator or power steering.

I know this because I replaced all of the pulleys after noticing the play, but kept the old belts. Two days after replacing pulleys, noise was back. Replaced the belts and haven't had a problem since. For the cost of a $5 can of belt lube, you can eliminate whether or not it's the belts and save yourself about $60 if it is the belts.
