Default 318ti AMR500 Supercharger Hyde Motorworks

Hi 318ti Form I am an owner of a 1995 318Ti and I will be attempting to install a AMR 500 supercharger in it this Spring / Summer.

There are a lot of random things on the internet and youtube with regards to this small supercharger and I am hoping to flesh-out the pros and cons of the unit.

I am in possession of a Hyde Motorworks MOAB 4 Kit hydemotorworks.com
I also have a AMR 500 charger that I have purchased off of Alibaba Express.

I will post my progress over the next month or so and will do my best to take this project to completion.

Things to know:

-I am not looking to make my car a 1/4 mile monster...just looking for a small bump in power.

-I live at 3200ft / 975 m above sea level so air is already at a premium up here.

-The Hyde Kit is meant for a M43-M44 engine so there will be some changes for my M42 engine

-Hyde has a great install video on his site for this unit so if you want a really good look at his product(s) please go explore.

-I have a very good build partner who is an ex-machinist and a past owner of a 318 DASC car so he will be the main installer of most items.

-I am very new to posting on these forms so excuse me being a Luddite in the future.

Hello All

Here are some updates of the AMR500 Hyde project.

-Pictured here is my 318 engine bay with all the stuff removed...other than the throttle body as we still had it on the cable at this point.

-We took the fasteners off the charcoal canister and let it hang.

-As per the Hyde instructions we used the 2 alternator bolt locations to mount the Hyde MOAB. This required using longer (10mm longer) bolts
Also the instructions list to only do one bolt at a time...this keeps the alternator in place

-Using the Spacers and a new Belt Idler Puller supplied in the Hyde Kit it is ready for belting

-We also belted the whole thing up. Here was a change from the Hyde M43-44 engine kit. We ended up needing a shorter belt for my M-42 engine. A 2050mm 6PK belt was purchased locally and fitted nicely.

All in all this was a pretty easy procedure. We had to open up a few of the holes in the MOAB, for easy bolt alignment, but this is probably do to m-42 differences.
In general the MOAB gets this Supercharger in the right place and alignment with little fuss.
I would say that the MOAB easily saves a month or more of messing around with cardboard cutouts trying to achieve proper placement.
The MOAB is nicely engineered and finished and it combined with the AMR500 looks almost factory in the engine bay.

Thanks Hyde.

As mentioned above my build partner is a Machinist and a Supercharger nut.
He has come up with a very nice intake and by-pass valve assembly.
Using a by-pass valve from a 2006 mini cooper S he custom made a throttle body plate
with the by-pass valve fitted to the plate. This is then piped to a second custom plate at the stock throttle body...very slick!
We also made some gaskets for the connections.

Good morning!

I have also recently bought the kit for AMR500, I have a M42 engine with 130.000km and a M44 mounted with 220.000km.

I'm from Spain, by the way. Here this modification cannot be homologated.

I'm sitting with the popcorn waiting for your car's progress.

The thread was recommended to me by MisterM52.
So far the customer service is great, from the company.

I'll try to be around from time to time to see if I can be of any help.

A big hug!

Thanks for the note. I am expecting good things this weekend with regards to the AMR 500 project. I will post next week with results.

Cheers

I look forward to the results!
They told me from hydemotorworks that they have a mapper in Canada, I'm telling you this because I see that you are from there.

Best regards, Cheers!

Well is was a nice night in the garage and I got pretty far along.

Here are some pics:

AMR 500 installed with all the piping completed. Note* at the moment we are mainly using ABS plumbing pipe and silicone automotive tubing. If all goes well I will look into getting items fabricated.

We closed off the PCV valve by Disconnecting the valve cover hose and the PCV at the back of the manifold. I put a small filter on the valve cover hose and plugged the one coming out of the PCV...sorry image to come.

The Throttle Body we installed upside down and custom made a new throttle cable hanger and basically reversed the action on the throttle lever. This was actually pretty easy and it put the throttle cable in a very natural position and gave us lots of adjustment opportunities. (Used some aluminum L to fabricate).
To tell you the truth we could not figure out a different way to do this without getting a new longer throttle cable)

Using the Extreame 90 silicone tube we got the Throttle Body to attach to the rest of the air system that was directed down into the front fender...took a few ties at finding an air filter that would fit. (Longer and Thinner ended up working)

Here are a pics of the Throttle Cable modification and the Air Filter and MAF stuffed into the front fender. We also fabricated a simple bracket to attach all of this to an existing mount to keep it all secure and not rattling around.

By the end of the night we had it ready for testing and start up.
This will have to happen on the weekend so I will post results next week.

Cheers from Canada

As you can see in the last pic.
I lenghtend the MAF wires by building a new section with 5 wire cable and connectors.
My build partner said just soldering the extension in would have been better.

Here is a pic of everything ready to go.

Good morning, Cheers

Is the throttle cable modification necessary?
I haven't bought the silicone retrofit kit either, I'll have to make do with whatever I can get in my country.

Looks really good, I'm looking forward to seeing the results at the weekend.

Above all I'm interested in the gain we get, 40hp would be perfect for our little 4 cylinders.

Cheers and best regards.

Responds to Question:

We could not figure out a way to get the throttle cable to reach the new Throttle Body position.

Perhaps Hyde can help out. He did mention to me that the stock cable can be used but he did not elaborate on how to do it.

In the end the way we did it means you can keep the stock cable in pretty much the same position. But I am sure there are other ways to accomplish it.

Here are a few Pics of the finished (so far) build.
It will be off the blocks and on the ground this weekend.

Note* the car is now running and idles nice.

We have had some belt alignment issues so I have ordered in all new Idler pulleys off Amazon.

We have had to play with the spacers behind the MOAB bracket and the Alternator mounts and the mount and the AMR 500 to get better alignment
at the moment it is pretty good. If I had a super thing washer for the Hyde Additional Idler pulley it would be almost 100%.

We are getting 3 pounds in the garage with quick snaps with no load.
Which has impressed my build partner will see what happens on the road this weekend and hopefully check the Air/Fuels at the same time..

Cheers

Here are a few more pics and Video of the car running at idle with a few pops on the Throttle. The Bypass Valve is working nice and keeping the car nice and quiet at idle.
