I thought the EWS under the glove box was just the "control module", and all that did was cross ref the code from the EWS box(under the steering column) with the DME.... here is what i got with my engine your telling me I don't have everything I need to get this motor running? __________________ 11/97 Base 328Ti | | | 05-22-2008, 04:08 PM | #32 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: maritimes Posts: 1,433 | so I went in under my glove box last night, and unfortunately for me, i did find another EWSII box... white box with a circuit board inside... so i guess i don't have everything. good thing the dealer is 60 miles away..... : __________________ 11/97 Base 328Ti | | | 05-22-2008, 07:58 PM | #33 | Member Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: lancashire Posts: 48 | can you not get hold of the ewsII box that matches the new DME and ews components?, you could also find a car that has been broke for parts and ask for the all the EWS parts and DME that all match... otherwise its a dealer trip :S | | | 05-22-2008, 09:59 PM | #34 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: maritimes Posts: 1,433 | well it would probably cost me the same to get a matching DME/EWS/etc as it would to make the trip to the dealer. Contacted the seller of the motor, originally he told me the shell had been sold to a guy in a neighbouring province, now he tells me its in Montreal (not close to me at all) and I called him on it and showed his old msg where he said it was sold close by, and he didn't respond, so it looks like im SOL as far as getting the matching control unit.... effing asshat this guy turned out to be. __________________ 11/97 Base 328Ti | | | 05-22-2008, 10:06 PM | #35 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2007 Location: Eugene Oregon Posts: 6,182 | see if you can get in contact with the guy that bought the shell and maybe he can ship the part out to you __________________ -Josh Sold-1995 318ti, Club Sport, Hellrot Sold-1996 318ti, Active Model, Boston Green Current- 1995 318ti, sport model, schwartz | | | 05-22-2008, 10:33 PM | #36 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2007 Location: Newcastle UK !BMW TECH! Posts: 110 | The box under the steering column is just the receiver for the antenna ring round the ignition barrel. I cant see why this would need to be swapped. The important bit is the white EWSII box under the glovebox im afraid. You either need to get the one from the car you got the DME and key chips from or have a new one fitted and coded by a dealer. Sorry dude! I had the same problem getting bits for my swap. Drove 40 miles to get the engine. Later found out i needed more parts so i arranged with the guy i bought the lump from, for me to go back down to get the parts. I drove the 40 miles back down to get them and he wasn't there! I went stupid on the phone to him. I hate people that mess you about! | | | 05-22-2008, 10:44 PM | #37 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: maritimes Posts: 1,433 | tried that and he told me he "lost" the guys number... so im just getting the run-around... as said, he is an asshat... ive had many problems with this guy that i won't go into (milage misrepresented, car stolen, blah blah blah) ... so im just going to say **** him and get the dealer to do it properly, that way i can still use all my keys. __________________ 11/97 Base 328Ti | | | 05-22-2008, 10:58 PM | #38 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2007 Location: Newcastle UK !BMW TECH! Posts: 110 | I think you got the right idea. Thats what i did and just got the bits i needed from a scrap yard for £10. Would have cost me more in juice to go back down there again! Good luck. Took mine for a short drive tonight. Its awsome. Bet you cant wait to get it on the road! | | | 05-28-2008, 11:47 AM | #39 | Junior Member Join Date: May 2008 Location: wakefeild west yorks Posts: 1 | hi new to forum . it seems ihave every fault that this thread lists so ill keep it breif. ihave afault code 18 nopower to ews but the car cranks pump energises and ihave fuel on the plugs but no spark all relays ok as are the fuses . the only difference ive noticed is there used to be a click from the rear of glove box when you turned the ignition off now you cant . ipresume this is from the relay but it works fine in other places so its ok . can anyone help. | | | 05-28-2008, 04:20 PM | #40 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2005 Location: TX Posts: 140 | This may be of some help should you decide to get rid of your EWS II: Bypassing EWS II | | | 05-28-2008, 05:26 PM | #41 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: maritimes Posts: 1,433 | if you read that entire thread posted above... it doesn't look like this is a good method of doing this. 90% of people said it did not work. and something about being able to start the car without a key, and being able to do it with a screwdriver or something... doesn't seem fun. __________________ 11/97 Base 328Ti | | | 05-28-2008, 05:40 PM | #42 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2005 Location: TX Posts: 140 | Good luck with this. Let us know if you are able to bypass dealer realignment. | | | 06-08-2008, 08:18 AM | #43 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2006 Location: Pittsburgh, PA Posts: 1,224 | can we pop the clutch to start the car to get it to a dealer to have EWS realigned? | | | 06-08-2008, 03:42 PM | #44 | Member Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: lancashire Posts: 48 | Not a chance, without the EWS correctly working the car will NOT start, in your case it needs realigning, its not going to start like that... | | | 07-21-2008, 09:23 PM | #45 | Junior Member Join Date: Jul 2008 Location: Crystal Lake, IL Posts: 2 | After leaving my key in the ignition for a weekend, my battery was dead, wouldn't take a charge, and wouldn't jump start, so I swapped the battery. Afterwards, it was throwing Code 07 94 (EWS), and it wouldn't even turn over with the new battery. After checking all fuses (OK), then reading this and other related threads, I figured on a long shot I'd try my spare key, and badabing badaboom, it fired right up! Then I shut it off, put my original key in, and it worked too. Can't argue with success. Any ideas or was this just a fluke? | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
