Single mass fylwheels are in the e30s. Dual mass flywheels help to keep the driving feel "civilized" and comfortable rather than sport like. There is a lot more weight on them to keep the revs from dropping so quickly and making shift points smoother and not so jerky compared to a lightweight flywheel. __________________ 1995 Hellrot Clubsport 318ti -Gone 1996 Schwartz II Sport 357ti - 5.7L V8 LS1/6 1997 Moregrun Metallic 318ti - Gone 1998 Schwartz II sport 318ti - M50TUB25/5 | | | 10-12-2007, 05:26 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2007 Location: nj Posts: 316 | ok great, so when i order one ill get the dual mass. thanks blue | | | 10-12-2007, 05:28 PM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: 43609 Posts: 3,425 | Is yours messed up or something? If i were you and needed to replace the flywheel, id go with a lightweight one, nothing extreme, but something a little lighter than the stock 28lb one. __________________ 1995 Hellrot Clubsport 318ti -Gone 1996 Schwartz II Sport 357ti - 5.7L V8 LS1/6 1997 Moregrun Metallic 318ti - Gone 1998 Schwartz II sport 318ti - M50TUB25/5 | | | 10-12-2007, 05:32 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2007 Location: nj Posts: 316 | yeah well im doin this auto-to-ma swap so i got everything i need but the clutch kit, but even some sites say (e36 318ti 95-99 without twin or with? is there a choice? | | | 10-12-2007, 05:44 PM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: 43609 Posts: 3,425 | Ah, i see. No, there isnt a choice, dual mass all the way. Are you getting a stock clutch setup? __________________ 1995 Hellrot Clubsport 318ti -Gone 1996 Schwartz II Sport 357ti - 5.7L V8 LS1/6 1997 Moregrun Metallic 318ti - Gone 1998 Schwartz II sport 318ti - M50TUB25/5 | | | 10-12-2007, 09:45 PM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2007 Location: nj Posts: 316 | yah sachs clutch kit but im going to get a lightweight flywhl 2 bc its so worth it | | | 10-12-2007, 10:09 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: Oxford, Ohio Posts: 868 | I would not buy a dual mass flywheel as a replacement. They are outrageously expensive ~$900. Just get a single mass and it will be cheaper and work well. I would not get a very lightweight version. But something in the 15-20lb range? You can also swap a M20 single mass flywheel in, but you have to change the pinion on your starter, too. | | | 10-13-2007, 12:23 AM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Minneapolis Posts: 1,587 | There is actually a choice when it comes to stock 318ti flywheels and clutches. If you look in the ETK ( www.realoem.com) the european M42 318ti had a single mass flywheel and a dual mass flywheel. I assume the difference was AC vs. no AC. I think all American cars had AC, thus only dual mass flywheels. Sorry for the shamless plug, but I have one I've been trying to sell for a while. http://318ti.org/forum/showthread.php?t=11586 | | | 10-13-2007, 12:51 AM | #11 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2004 Location: Northern Michigan Posts: 867 | Quote: Originally Posted by CirrusSR22 tThe european M42 318ti had a single mass flywheel and a dual mass flywheel. I also didn't notice any drivability difference, besides it being just slightly easier to stall from a stop, it still shifts very smoothly. It now revs much quicker in 1st and 2nd and doesn't slip! __________________ Pete N | | | 10-13-2007, 07:04 AM | #13 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2007 Location: nj Posts: 316 | the flywheel i have now is off a stock 318is(93). whats the best clutch kit i should get for that......(single mass or dual?) | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
