» Site Navigation | | » Recent Threads | | | | | | 02-29-2012, 05:40 AM | #1 | Junior Member Join Date: Feb 2012 Location: Palo Alto, CA Posts: 13 | just bought a 96 318ti base, first BMW so i've been a VW guy for a while, since i started driving. i started driving very late in life, when i was 23. i grew up in Philadelphia and never needed a car until i took a job in California that happens to be in a town that is... miserable at best. lack of public transit forced me to learn to drive. i fell in love with driving and with cars, and fast forward 3 years i own 2 MK1 VW diesels and a 67 Bug. the girlfriend got sick of my cars not having airbags and essentially told me to sell one (or two if she had it her way) and buy a newer reliable car. we live 40 miles away from work and where putting a ton of miles on her car. so i need a car that gets good MPG, was cheap, and had to be fun. never even occurred to me to look for BMWs. test drove some civic SI's and some newer golfs and just wasn't that into it. then i happened to find a 1996 318ti locally at a used car lot. figured i'd try it out, as i had borrowed my buddies 5 series wagon and loved it, even though it was an automatic. fell in love on the first test drive. probably paid a little too much for it @ 4k out the door registered until April 2013, but i'm still happy. a couple little quirks need to be worked out, but nothing beyond what i'd expect on an older car. the only two things that bug me about the car are no bentley manual that covers the ti specifically, and no way (that i've found) to put a hitch on it for a bicycle hitch rack. here is how she sits: don't worry, i'll be bugging you all for advice soon enough! like the problem with my engine not warming up properly... but i'll post that up in the right forum (i hope) | | | 02-29-2012, 05:48 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2007 Location: norcal - 94590 Posts: 3,186 | Welcome to the Forum! I had the same problem when I bought mine...it was a bad thermostat. Good luck...nice looking ti you have there. Maybe because people saw me in the mk1s though... Heh. Might have seen the car in the wheels and tires forum maybe. Didn't see any other enkei on there do I posted. I bought a thermostat, nice to have anyway. I'll bleed it first to see if that does it.
