My 1998/99 Original BMW Teile and Zubehör [BMW parts and accessories] catalog lists a kit to retrofit central locking with a price on request.

Hmmm. The compilers of the ETK seem convinced that your car has central locking.

I probably should have asked a few questions earlier.

What month and year was the car built?

For which market (e.g., Canada, U.S., Europe)?

What mods have been done to the car that touch the locks (e.g., an alarm)?

If you lock or unlock a door or the rear hatch with a key, does the rest of the car lock or unlock as well?

Revive bump for this thread. I have a 95' 318ti base model that I'm completely restoring. Definitely an eye sore right now, but I've gotten most my m-tech interior in but wanted to wire in a central locking button in before finalizing the interior.

Question is: Has there been a write up? I could tap into the stock alarm system but trying to go oem as possible if that makes any sense.

Have you tried applying 12V through, say, a 1–2.2K resistor to pin 19 of the 26-pin yellow connector X13253 of the ZKE?

If that doesn't work, you may need a later ZKE module, for 9/95 onward.

I've read through the etm manual. My car should have a zke module. If it will respond to the 12v signal is the question. If its just one signal wire that engages and disengages the locks then really its a lot simpler than I previously thought. Thanks.

You are welcome.

How easy the mod will be depends on when BMW added support for a central locking switch to the ZKE's hardware and firmware. I reckon you could retrofit a switch to an old ZKE that doesn't support it – with a couple small signal relays (one that magnetically latches) and some diodes, resistors and capacitors. I have done part of the mod in one car and the rest of the mod in another, but not yet the entire mod within a single car.
