It must be great to have a garage and dedicated work space! The tool cabinet is also way cool.

It sure as hell beats working on the street in front of my apartment and have random doofuses walking up and looking over my shoulder and asking questions about the motor and and "what does that do"?

Anyway, good luck with your project!

Paul

Thanks! I'm only 19 so its actually my parents garage, I only usually get it to use when I really need it, my mom parks in there the rest of the time. But I have worked outside in the driveway and I know how much that sucks.. I've fixed a leaking fuel line in an auto parts store parking lot before, I know what you mean about "doofuses" looking over your shoulder or everyone and their grandma wondering what you're doing.

Wow, 19! I'm even more impressed. When I was 19 I could only knew how to put gas in my car and drive too fast! LOL.

Congrats on picking up so much know how so early. I wish I had learned that soon.

As it is, I'm pretty good at the art of "remove and replace". Saves me a ton o'dough!

Just yesterday I was installing a sparco strut bar and had a couple of guys literally leaning into my engine bay trying to figure out what they were looking at. I almost laughed when one of them pointed to the cold air intake and said "nice turbo"!!! LMAO

Taken me a while but I finally got it all buttoned up tonight, I plan on filling it with new fluids in the morning and cranking it over with fingers crossed I didn't mess anything up and got all the hoses correct!

I'll start with before and after because we all know that's what you're really here for and then I'll show the steps along the way.

Before:

After:

Don't mind the ugly coil pack and plug wire cover, my Coil on plug kit is in the mail and hasn't gotten here yet so I didn't bother making the old stuff look good.

VHT Wrinkle painted most of the top end stuff as well as the front of the block (for any haters, TO EACH THEIR OWN!)
-valve cover
-upper intake manifold
-lower intake manifold
-throttle body
-upper time case cover
-lower timing case
-Oil filter housing

Gloss blacked any brackets and parts I could
-ac brakcet
-Air Flow Meter
-alternator/PS pump bracket
-intake manifold brackets
-PS cooling line on the steering rack

Sprayed any plastic parts I thought that needed to be refreshed in SEM trim black
-entire airbox
-battery box
-charcoal canister
-oil cap
-injector harness cap

Replaced the brake booster and didn't like the glossy black finish it came with so I sprayed that with trim black as well.

List of parts replaced during the tear down (skip this if you don't care):

Valve cover gasket
Timing cover gaskets
Water pump
Thermostat + gasket
Upper and lower rad hoses
All other cooling hoses
Plastic water pipe from the block
Intake manifold gaskets (lower to block, lower to spacer, spacer to upper)
Throttle body gasket
Crankcase vent valve
Coolant sensors
Knock sensors
Oil filter housing gasket and o-ring
Oil filter kit
Injector o-rings
Injector clips
Brake booster
Brake booster check valve and grommet
All vacuum lines
Crank seal
Crank bolt (has to be done if you take it off)
Idler pulley's + caps
Ac Pulley
Fresh oil (Royal Purple 15W-40)
Fresh coolant (lordco brand... BMW blue is no better IMO)
Fresh PS fluid (Royal purple ATF)
Pennzoil dot 4 brake fluid (to top up after brake booster swap)

That's all I can think of.. now for a few pictures, I didn't take many while I was working just usually when I stopped for breaks or at the end of the night.

While It was still a mess but at least I got the PS rack clean

Replacing the booster, yes the ABS pump has to come out to get it off.. Kind of a pain

Pile of parts in my garage

Primered parts

Wrinkle black valve cover

Timing covers and AC bracket

Intake manifolds and throttle body

Starting to put it back together, still had to detail the passenger side of the engine bay at that point

Almost back together

All back together still don't like the passengers side might have to clean it more

For those who don't like the wrinkle black pictures don't do it justice, seeing it in person might change your opinion.

Working on a project tonight/tomorrow morning more to come soon, as well as detailing the interior, getting the scratches off my cluster and giving the carpet a thorough cleaning in the morning.

THEN drive it like it was meant to be driven.. slow because the m42 is gutless
