I put a used engine with 90k miles (as per seller) on my 1996 TI. Engine now has 143k miles. So far so good. Car is my daily driver now since my daughter bought a 5-speed toyota and I don't drive it too far from home. Any reason why I should replace the crankshaft sensor soon when it is working fine? __________________ 1996 Ti 280k miles and still going.... 1993 964 - holding on to this one 2001 Burban, 240k miles 2018 Suburban Z71 | | | 01-21-2014, 03:50 PM | #2 | Junior Member Join Date: Jan 2014 Location: Edmonton, Canada Posts: 6 | I don't believe there is a rule. It is a non contact sensor, they well protected and generally fail due to vibration. I'd say it's luck, in my E28 M5 it failed at ~200,000km, but my wife's E30 325ix is still OK at 345,000km. You will most likely mess up something else while replacing the part that doesn't need to be changed so "No Touchy" unless it is broken, Ok | | | 01-22-2014, 07:43 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2009 Location: Georgia Posts: 595 | Ok, still worky, no touchy. We'll see how long it lasts. __________________ 1996 Ti 280k miles and still going.... 1993 964 - holding on to this one 2001 Burban, 240k miles 2018 Suburban Z71 | | | 01-24-2014, 08:46 PM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2007 Location: Gulfport, Florida Posts: 3,208 | Quote: Originally Posted by bazar01 Ok, still worky, no touchy. All they are is a hall sensor that picks up the cam timing wheel as it passes by the sensor. Crank PS sensors break more ofter in my opinion since they are reluctor. Many articles say the Cam sensor is reluctor but I know from experience on a M44 cam is hall and crank is reluctor. Reluctors have to tell the rise, top and fall of each tooth off of the reluctor wheel they monitor which on our motors is a 60/2. Every 15 teeth on the reluctor wheel is 1/4 crank turn and after reading 60 teeth or 360 degrees crank turn there are 2 teeth missing for reset TDC of crank and then it all starts again. Too much information I know but I'm chatty today. My car now has 268k miles on the body and 190k on the same crank sensor that came with the used engine. So far so good ! Am I pushing it? I hate to bog down in the middle of nowhere. __________________ 1996 Ti 280k miles and still going.... 1993 964 - holding on to this one 2001 Burban, 240k miles 2018 Suburban Z71 | | | 12-15-2016, 12:16 AM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2012 Location: Portland, OR Posts: 159 | Kinda a thread jack but my car is throwing the CEL every now and then and is the camshaft position sensor. Car runs the same whether the light is on or off. Should I change it? It's not very cheap and doesn't look too easy to change so I haven't done it yet. Is it imperative? Am I hurting anything by continuing to drive it? Thanks for any input | | | 12-15-2016, 02:47 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2009 Location: Georgia Posts: 595 | I had issues with my Beck Arnley camshaft sensor throwing P0340 3 times a day after about 40k miles. I drove it for a while maybe for about 3 months until I decided to replace it with a BMW sensor for fear it will get me stranded. It only took me about an hour to remove the upper intake, pull the old one and fish the new one under the intake and put the upper intake back on. __________________ 1996 Ti 280k miles and still going.... 1993 964 - holding on to this one 2001 Burban, 240k miles 2018 Suburban Z71 | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
