Default Guy said it came from a 1.9L california 318ti...

Saw Craigslist post of an engine for 300$ and drove 6hours from Minnesota to Indiana and buy this. Owner said its a bmw 1.9L from a california 318ti with 130xxx miles. Thought it would be an easy replacement for my m44 engine 5-speed 1998 318ti sport. I did notice the some differences of it but ended up buying it because for me it looked like it was a 'steal'.

When I got home at 1am in the morning, i took a look at it and there was no plastic connecter on the back of the head cylinder for the two coolant hoses nor the interior of the head is quite different from my m44.

Can someone tell me what engine this is?

m42 head on top of an m44 block with an m44 timing cover and trigger wheel installed.

Any goods in that than a full m44? Is this a bolt in for my 98 ti 5 speed then?
If so, how can i bypass the plastic connecter that was suppose to connect the back of my m44 head? Thanks for the reply.

The two water hoses off the back of the m44 head are on the side of m42 head. You can see the large one in the picture and the small one is approximately in the middle of the head. As for bolting right in, the problem I see is the where the lower radiator hose connects to the engine conflicting with the exhaust vacuum shut off valve.

1st picture is what i just got; i don't think it's a m44 block because the knocking sensor isn't there like the third picture.

The 3rd picture is my m44 engine.

I believed I just bought a full m42 setup. Now all i need are harness and a m42 DCM yeah?
