what year of car is it in? '95's have m42's while '96+ have m44's. Quick way to tell for sure, m42's have an aluminum thermostat housing. You can also look under the car, m44's have a pre-cat and post-cat o2 sensor while m42's only have a pre-cat sensor. m42's usually have an aluminum oil filter housing cap, but some of the later models came with plastic ones like the m44.

Its a 95. aluminum oil filter housing cap.

Will a M44 head work on a M42?

Sorry for the hijack, but a quick question. Will a 95 thermostat work on a 96+?

the easiest way to tell is the MAF sensor vs the AFM sensor. m42 has the big flapper afm, m44 has a nice smooth maf

You sure about that? The mounting holes look pretty different in the realoem illustration. Not to mention the m42 aluminum thermostat housing is separate from the actual thermostat while the m44 thermostat comes together as an assembly. Compare the pics:

If you've personally installed an aluminum M42 thermostat housing on an M44 engine or you've seen it done, then cool. But if not, you just costed someone $64 worth of headache:

Thermostat housings are not interchangeable.

No clue about the heads being interchangeable, my guess would be no though.

as jess said, the thermostat is integrated into the housing on the M44, not on the M42.

another difference is the intake itself. The M42 has a simple "log" style intake while the M44 has a curvy two stage intake to broaden the torque curve

Which is considered to be the overall better block? Tuneability, gas mileage, maintenance required?

Is there any benefit in swapping the intake? (if possible)

I've been looking into this today, and I haven't seen any hard data, but it looks like "probably not". If your DISA valve is working properly on the M44, you'll have better lower end torque and better higher RPM horsepower due to the intake runner length change.

I just noticed. The m44 has a intake tube, that rams air behind the passenger headlight, and loops around fan; while the m42 just rams it directly from the drivers side.
