Not sure where this should go- airpump question

This could really go into exhaust, intake or engine.

I am reclaiming my car from a wannabe "tuner" (a hollow muffler and alot of cut wires and stupid repairs)

I'm sure some thing holds the top of the air pump on...

Mine is held on by 18 ga wire wrapped around and twisted through the holes.

Can anyone tell me how their correct air pump top plate is held on?

from what I've read.... It was originally riveted on. The rivets fail and then can be replaced with nuts and bolts.

I was thinking that might be it but pictures are too hard to make out.

Correct. It's held together with 6 aluminum rivets that tend to break over time and allow the secondary air pump to separate and leak. I replaced mine with nuts and bolts. Easy fix, better than factory. Idk what would posess someone to use wire to strap it together when there's no shortage of nuts and bolts or even rivets for that matter

OP, I know how frustrating it can be fixing someone else's crappy work. Just look at it as though everything you correct, you're doing a good deed in which your car will reward you for in many years to come. Best wishes!

Dude that is so right.

I got my first car when I was 14. I traded a old style Sony walkman and Pat Benatar tape for it. It was all in peices and I put that thing together in the front yard over a summer (My dad instructed but never helped).

I remember my first ride in it like yesterday when my dad left on a Saturday. We didn't bolt the seats down so "we" 3 deep in the front bench seat were going like 40mph as soon as I left my house, I had hardly drove a car, and I hit the brakes hard and what happens...The seat slides forward jams the brakes 100% and flies up...

Moral of the story:

2 of my friends heads in the windshield so that got broken (lucky they were ok) and I got my chin busted up real good from the steering wheel on that deal. We drove home very slow and then my dad came home and even though we lied he knew from the head imprints in that windshield that we were in the car so I got restricted for a month...

I got a $2,600 ticket in that car at age 15 before I even had a license, that is a whole different story...

Man that is classic "Jerry Rigging" at it's finest. That will cause some issues too. Like Jess instructed above and you will be fine.

unbelievable that they would use such crap rivets to put this air pump together. just changed the pcv, but it was fine. i think the air pump leak has been the problem this whole time. thanks cooljess

No worries, hope you get it sorted. It's a pretty easy fix.
