Default Oil filter change after oil change

Hi,

This might be a dumb question, but my technical maintenance experience level is pretty low, so I figured I should ask.

A little while ago, I changed my oil. Due to time constraints, I was unable to replace the oil filter. Now I'm afraid that opening the oil filter casing would be like poking a hole in a full cup. Can I safely open the oil filter casing to replace the filter? And if not, is it okay to leave an old filter in until my next oil change?

Thanks in advance!

Lucky for us, our cars have the filter mounted on top. Unscrew cap, swap filter, screw on cap, no mess.

i would make sure that the car has been sitting for a while and is cooled down before i would open that cap.

I change my oil when the engine is warm. It's warm, but not hot. Give it maybe 10 minutes with the hood up (appx time it takes to drain the oil) and you should be fine.

Also, while the filter cartridge is on top, I use a plastic bag in my other hand to grab the entire assembly immediately as it comes out to keep drips low.

After you change the filter, you'll have lost a little oil. Just check the dipstick and top off where necessary.

I have a gallery that goes through the oil change steps. Be sure to change the o-rings as well.

Did you put in a new crush washer when you reinstalled the drain pan bolt?
