Default Turbo Cams for M44

I stumbled upon this website while searching for m44 bumpsticks:
http://www.deficarsport.com/touring-bmw-m44.htm

I sent them an email asking if any of their cams would be appropriate for a forced induction setup, becaues I know next to nothing about cam lift and duration. This is the email he sent back to me:

Dear Mr. DT.

I can offer you set Leigh way cams for hydraulic standard lifters BMW M44 Turbocharger engine.

$628 Euros for both cam shafts seems a lot cheaper than Schrick. Has anyone heard of these guys before? They are located in Belgium.

Also, does the lift and duration look appropriate for forced induction?

272 degree duration and 0.413" lift... Those are MONSTERS! Very fast ramp too. A solid lifter (flat tappet) cam with this lift would have about a 292 degree duration I would think to make the ramp. Since we have roller cams, we can get away with a more radical profile, but DAMN!

You may not like the "idle" characteristics with these cams (if you can call 1000-1100 RPM idle...).

That's based on my experience with NA engines. With the turbo (which is barely turning at idle) I would expect similar "idle" quality. It will "idle" like a monster truck.

Check and be sure you don't have to notch the pistons for valve clearance (they are already notched, but this may have to be made deeper- even if the lift is the same, more duration means the piston has more time on the up-stroke with the valve open).

One thing is for sure: it WILL make some power at the top end. You may have to build up the bottom end to rev higher to take full advantage of this profile. Low end torque will suffer without doubt, but the top end (IE high RPM) will be spectacular. I would venture a guess these would still be making power up to 9K rpm (perhaps more) if the bottom could hold together. Probably looking at 225 HP at 9K (NA) and 338 at 9K with a blower. Just a guess. You will want taller gears to take advantage of the elevated operation envelope of the cams; something in the neighborhood of 3.73:1 or perhaps as far as 4.30:1 (you'd have to experiment a bit, and/or see what the manufacturer suggests for final drive gearing).

I looked into the Schrick cams, head work, blowers etc. EXTENSIVELY before deciding to do a swap. It is VERY expensive to make big power from a four, and you always sacrifice either drive ability and/or low end torque. In this case, I think you will be sacrificing both. I went with the 3.2 because I have 250 (crank, peak) HP and plenty of torque, with outstanding reliability and drive ability. These were my criteria, regardless of the fact that the ti is NOT my daily driver (I have other cars to drive too). If it's your only car, I would strongly suggest NOT getting cams this radical.

That being said, it will go like stink above 4000 RPM...

My (far more than) two cents...
