Default interference eng 1.8L ?

Hi,

My son owns a 318ti 1995 and my goal by being here is to help him keep it going. Now with ~172K. He's 18, saved up and bought his dream car.

From what I could find the 1.8L has a timing chain not a belt, correct? And could someone tell me if this is an interference engine or not? Thanks for your help.

it's a chain, I'm not sure what you mean by an interference engine though

It basically means if the timing of the motor is off can the valves and piston collide with one another.

Luckily BMW uses timing chains, and with regular oil maintenance, they are pretty strong. Some older toyota's and honda's use a timing belt and are interference engines, so if you lose that timing belt, the engine is toast.

Most honda engines are interference and you lose valves when the belts break. I know for a fact that vw 2.0s are not. Mine broke 3 timing belts while driving and was never toast.

Just had this discussion with my mechanic recently. The ONLY engines hes ever seen from BMW in his career that used belts were a 6 in the mid 80s and the M40 4 banger. Even my old 320i from 82 had a chain which lasts forever.
