Default Is this a noise any of you m44 owners have heard? VIDEO!

My m44 developed this sound that I cannot quite figure out. I drove it around for awhile last night no problem, then I stopped at a convenient store When I got back to my car and fired it up, this noise was present. I hooked it up to a scanner and no codes showed up. After driving it a bit today, it started out fine then developed the noise after 25 minutes of driving. After driving a bit more, it began to quiet down under acceleration, returning if the rpms dwindled. An erratic idle also accompanies this problem, I think they are related but hopefully someone here has heard this sound before. When I shut the car off, the noise winds down on its own after the engine is off, whicih makes me think a vacuum leak somewhere? The sound seems to be coming from around where the roundel logo is imprinted on top of the engine...TIA!

pcv valve for sure, try this, whenever the car is making this noise open the oil cap and see if the sound goes away and if the soud goes away then just replace the pcv valve around $50

pcv valve? Is that a pretty difficult piece to get to?

I'm going to try that when I hear the sound again...what would cause the noise exactly? Is it air?

Jean, I tried removing the oil cap and the dipstick.....the sound went away almost instantly! Good to know that is my problem. I assume the bad PCV/CCV also contributes to the erratic idle...

is it pretty easy to remove? Looks like there are two screws underneath holding it in place but would it be easier to disassemble the manifold or can I remove the PCV and tubes without taking it all apart?

Thanks!

yeah, the ccv valve is pretty simple to do yourself. two allen screws underneath and bam. easy switch. just be careful b/c somettimes the plastic impler may be broken from being worn out and go back in the opening. good luck.

good deal...I felt so much better when I pulled the dipstick and the sound disappeared. I'm happy to diagnose a 50 dollar part, as I was expecting something more internal and more money.

Did you remove anything to get to those allen bolts? I tried fitting my hand in there to see what size they are, but could not get a good angle...

Jean, You saved me money and trouble. I am so happy to see your post before shelling out money for replacing everything under the hood when I heard this sound from 318ic also

Thanks a lot. I second what poohlikeshunny said. "you da man!"
