Default Which Magnaflow Muffler should I get?

I'm a little confused over which one to get. I want to get a new Magnaflow muffler because my original muffler needs to be replaced and I'm on a budget. My mechanic says he will install whatever I get for $40 (cut off old one, weld on new one). I've looked on here to find out which Magnaflow model I need, but I see several and I'm trying to decide. Below are the ones I've found:

Magnaflow 14858 - Size looks good at 5"x8"x14", but when I looked it up it has a dual inlet, so I don't think that's the right one.

Magnaflow 14828 - 3" inlet and a 4" outlet. I think that's too big.

Magnaflow 11215 - 2.25" inlet/outlet, which looks like the right size, but it has a center inlet and center outlet.

I tried to look under my car (raining, ground muddy) and it looked like I need one with 2.25" inlet/2.25" outlet, 5" x 8" oval, 14" long, with offset inlet and offset outlet.

Based on that, the Magnaflow 14235 seems to fit the bill. Does that sound right?

I need to search for an old thread of mine.
What is important is that it's packed otherwise it will be obnoxiously loud, IMHO.

Found it.
I'm using this one.

I have twin cats but you can use it in either direction.

I've got a stock M44, so I don't think the dual outlet would work. How would you rate Magnaflow's quality? Do you like the sound?

I'm looking for something with a nice growl, but not too loud and not too ricey. I'm trying to save money so I can also get some preventative maintenance done, like a new water pump and fuel pump.

Just curious, I know you're on a budget, but have you taken a look at a Stromung?

I love my Magnaflow. I called Magnaflow directly for advice.

The first Magnaflow was too loud. No packing material. I thought I was going to go deaf after driving for 4 hours on the highway. I couldn't hear myself think. It's still sitting in my garage. The 2nd one I like a lot.

Buy it from Summit Racing. I think they have the best prices.

That's what I want, but I'm not sure I can afford it. I sent an e-mail to understeer.com yesterday, but they haven't answered yet. Depending on their answer, I might try to scrape the cash together.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't count on receiving a reply email from Understeer. I sent them an email over a fortnight ago regarding the purchase of a Stromung exhaust, and have yet to receive a replie.

However, I'd definitely recommend buying a Stromung directly from Stromung's site. I just purchased one from them the other day (although I haven't obviously received it yet) and their (Scott's) customer service was great! I'd definitely buy from them again!

If I go with the Magnaflow, am I right in selecting the 5"x8"x14" with offset 2.25" inlet/outlet pipes? I'm really leaning towards this because I've got 180K on my original water and fuel pumps. I'd really like to change those before they give out.

I went with the Magnaflow 14235 and ordered it from Summit Racing for $100. The Stromung was really tempting, but $500 for the parts plus another $100 or so for labor was more than I'm able to spend right now. Instead I'm going to have the Magnaflow muffler installed, get the water pump replaced, and change the fuel filter. I just hope I bought the right one! I remembered 1996 328ti's comment about packing material and checked with Magnaflow. The 14235 has the packing material inside. I'm going to reuse the stock resonator, so it should sound pretty good without being too loud.

Sounds good! Make sure you link us to a sound clip once it's installed!

Maintenance comes first! So you made the right decision!

Do you have the cat in there?

I like to run no cat a resinator and 2-chamber Flowmaster.

Yes, the cat's still in there. I need it to pass the California smog test. Does removal of the cat really increase power? I can always upgrade the rest of the exhaust later on with a high-flow cat and new resonator, piping, etc.

I'm all set - I'm going to do the muffler, fuel filter, and water pump on Tuesday!

Nothing powe wise that will make a world of difference. You can go to the Magnaflow website and get a highflow cat from them that is CA state legal.

I'll keep that in mind. Once I get the car at 100%, I plan to add a high-flow cat and either a resonator with new piping, or a Stromung cat-back setup. But that's way in the future. I still need to do new tires, brakes, suspension, etc.
