Thanks guys, i've found several thermostat and overheating threads but have to pick through them for the solution.

'Her indoors' was sitting with the engine idling and all of a sudden steam bellowed out from under the bonnet (the engine temp was normal but rose to half way - never went any higher). Anyhow, the garage replaced the thermostat and it hasn't happened again since. (it happened 3 weeks ago) and has been fine since, it has started going through at least 500ml - 1litre of water a week?

I don't know much about BMW's but from what i've read i'm going to check the plastic bleed screw by the rad cap, the hose at the back of the engine etc.

Interesting to note the M designation for engine types...we didn't know that existed, i'm assuming ours is a M44?.

As a side note has anyone got a direct link to what may help? I can then start asking questions in the correct section and not the lounge.

Cheers

Jamie

Not as yet mate...i'm getting there though. Plus i'm still adjusting to bending over to work around an engine, i'm used to standing on a box to reach the motor

I had that steam coming out of my hood issue not too long ago. They replaced the radiator in my case.

Take the radiator out and the fan, and you can STAND in your engine bay! No kidding, I've done it, and I know others have as well...
