Default M44 swap, now the car won't start....

I blew my engine out in my '98 318ti and swapped it with another m44 engine from a '98 z3. After installing it, I got it to start up after playing with the transmission for awhile and I let it run for about 1/2 hour before turning it off. Now the darn thing won't even turn over.....

Anybody have any thoughts?? I have an automatic transmission and the m44 I just put in came from a manual....could that have something to do with it??

I don't know what to say, somebody else with some knowledge will hopefully see this thread. It shouldn't matter if it came out of a manual to an auto so i don't think that has anything to do with it.

Did you use your original wiring harness on the ti engine as well a the original DME from the ti? If so, I would think you would be home free.

Since it did start first try, then won't re-start, I would check all your electrical connections on the engine.

If it did not start at all, I would think the Driveaway protection was the culprit...

Yeah, we used all my original wiring harnesses and the DME and no go. I thought maybe it was the Driveaway protection also but it did start to begin with and I have read that it shouldn't be an issue since it was the same engine (m44) that I took out.....

A bunch of warning lights came on when I first started it up, is this normal too? I replaced the water pump and the battery, so I'm pretty sure it can't be the battery......I will just have to check all of the electrical connections again, like you said. Thanks-

The "Vegas effect" (all the lights coming on) makes sence as you basically did a complete brain transplant...

Another idea which occured to me is some of the sensors on the 'new' engine may be bad/intermittent.

If you don't have a code reader, tow it to a dealer and ask them to scan it, and report back before any work is done...

Just another thought.......my gauge cluster is bad and I never had a chance to replace it (ie, the temperature gauge doesn't work anymore neither does the rpm gauge, which is the reason I overheated it in the first place)....could this have something to do with it? Should I get a new one in there right away?

I'll sell you my fully functional 1998 cluster for $100.00 or best offer.

Rebuilt unit from the dealer will be around $250.00 (ask while you're there to confirm).

I have the six now, and the 1.9 cluster is just collecting dust...

I actually bought one a week before I blew my engine....your right, it was about $250. Attempted to put it in myself but found that my hands were too big to get behind there to undo the connectors.....so I waited for the shop to do it for me....waiting ended up being very costly to me! haha

You sound like you really know your stuff, could I fly you over to WI to work on my car?? kidding.....

Well, sorry for your loss.

Let's hope everyone learns from this, and keeps up with the boring maintenance items and not just how to extract 2.7 HP points...

Problem solved....the ground from the battery came loose. Popped off right when we tightened it. Thanks for all your help!

sounds so familiar... when I did my first engine swap (it was an 87 325is) I didn't tighten down the grounding point that goes under the bolt on the passenger's side shock tower. The car would drive great and then cut out and not start... ended up getting it towed home twice, spent about $500 on different parts, only to find out that when my 12v work light was clipped on the car would work, and when it was unclipped the car would die... it's the simple things that'll get you!

what "blew up"?

I'd guess that price is kinda high. go to www.car-part.com and see what engines are going for in your area, I'd guess that for $1500 you could get something decent, then $400-$500 for someone to install it for you.
