Default M42 oil filter housing gasket: use gasket sealant?

I'm about to do the oil filter housing gasket on my '95 31ti. I know I did this job before, probably less than three years ago. I don't remember if I used gasket sealant or not. Any suggestions? It's the M42 so there's one O-ring, which I replaced, and no bush. I got a new O-ring and gasket, but I don't know if I should used gasket sealant on it.

I use a light spray gasket just to keep everything in place.
I don't think it's necessary but it makes the job easier.

Mine has the metal oil filter housing. It has something like the "bush" thing, but it's integral with the housing and only uses one O-ring. Is yours the plastic filter housing? Maybe it's a late production change. Mine is 6/95.

I used a light coat of RTV. Light being the key word. Tis was on a fel-pro gasket made of a gray paper material. I honestly don't think this the biggest leak point, I think the crappy o-rings on the bush cause most of the issues.

My gasket tore when I removed it.
Hard to say if that was contributing to the leak.

Light is the word. For me it's just to hold it in place.

Amen to that. Ive seen as many leaks caused by RTV as was fixed.

In general RTV is not for direct contact with Oil. OK for Antifreeze,,

I use Aircraft formagasket for most Pan or valve cover applications. If It has to touch oil I use the extra high temp red thats not shiny, more clay colored.

Cheers.

Formagasket is good no doubt, but it should only be used in applications where the gasket material is of vegetable fiber or paper only or straight metal to metal contact. The make up of formagasket is largely alcohol based so it will start to destroy rubber and silicone as soon as it is applied.

Any other gasket material such as he is looking at (rubber impregnated paper or plastic sheet such as garlock, the only two gaskets ive seen made for the housing) requires an RTV.

RTV is largely made of silicone and is therefore better for use with rubber. It also has higher heat resistance than you would expect.
