Default Backup lights INOP

Guessng its a backup light switch BUT before I crawl around under the thing,
is the backup light circuit a simple switch or does it tie into the lighting controller?

Don't have my manual yet...

Thanks
Dave

Unhappy

I have the same problem, backup lights don't work. Fuse is fine, bulbs are new. One night, it was really foggy, and they decided to work... that was a month ago, and since, they have not been working again.

I've messed with the switch, no idea what to do next.

The backup light switch was a known problem on my '95, had to replace it about 1 year after buying the car new. Don't know what other years were affected. I would suspect the backup light switch. It's located on the right side of the transmission, and from what I remember, mounted with 2 allen head screws. Have had no reliability problems with the new updated switch.

Good ole backup light switch... me too. I attempted to look for that thing today... but did not see it.. Any advice on where exactly on the right (or left according to Haynes) side of the tranny it is? I found some wiring that was way up where I couldn't reach. Is it easy to get out? Help!

If your car is a manual like mine then the problem is easy to fix. The switch is located on the drivers' side. It should be the only electrical connection on that side. The opposite side of the oxygen sensor. You just have to disconect the boot and swap out the sensor. Same exact problem that I had, this fixed it and I haven't had a problem since

There must not be a backup light switch on Auto Tranny? Hmm... that would lead me to believe (using my intuition, and a Haynes manual) that it is the gear selector itself or wiring, cuz the fuse and bulb are good. Now, how the hell do I check that crap?
