Default Fuel pump relay location for 1998 318ti

Note: This may not be the same for all 1998 cars. From what I've read, there was some funky production line practices around that time changing various parts, so hopefully this may help someone.

The location indicated in the various service manuals were wrong on my car for the location of the F/P relay. I don't have the VIN handy but after having to run the pump "manually" to empty the gas tank (bad gas), I found out the long and hard way (continuity to the fuel pum fuse) which relay is the proper relay.

From what I've read, location #1 is where the F/P relay is suppose to be. On my car, that location runs the secondary air pump. The F/P relay is in position #2.

See attachment.

The relay in my car in the proper position appears to be a dual throw relay but the center pin is not populated in the relay socket.

I really have to wonder just how much beer the engineers had when they were doing this subsystem...<groan>...

The relay locations can be mixed up due to removing the lines from the side of the box, they just clip in.

Interesting point. I am not used to having movable relay blocks, coming from a Mazda background (where we have a quickie jumper wire in the diagnostic connector to run the fuel pump which would have not required this exercise, then again, having a proper OBD-II diagnostic tool, I should have been able to do the same).

OTOH, I did search quite a bit and there seems to be quite a bit of disparity of relay locations across the years and models and it would have made a lot of sense to identify them inside the fuse cover with the same painstaking detail they did for the fuses!

It's been awhile since I played with this relay on my '98, but I seem to remember that it was not where Bentley said it should be. I'll be working with it later this week. I'll let you know what I find out.

UPDATE: I just finished doing some work on the car and my 9/97 production date ti also has the fuel pump relay in position 2 as opposed to position 1 indicated in the Bentley manual.
