Wow, I stumbled into this thread and couldn't be happier about it . I was looking and looking and looking for an autoparts store that carried the damn things. They were like $27.00 or more. Found the Strong Arm 4287 at Amazon for a little over $13.00 a piece. They gave me free shipping and $5.00 off my order. Bought 2 of them for $21.00. Ahh can't wait to be hands free, and stop feeling like the statue of liberty every time I want to get something out of the back.

Default Thanks!

This is exactly what I was looking for! Thanks for doing the research, it saved me a few hours. However, I spent some good time reading through all these posts and pricing on some Blazier struts. I opted to install one strut on the right side, since i figure I'll be using that hand to shut the hatch most of the time, and it works great. Not hard to close, doesnt fly up with force, just works great!

Use a screwdriver to take off the retaining clip on top of the old strut. After that, you should be able to pull it out very easily. It's a ball system, similar to a trailer hitch.

get a second person to hold the hatch up. Ive seen too many back windows shattered because they were using some type of support stick.

yea if you sit it in a spot on the hatch that is prone to slip lol. wedge it and it willl not move!

but then again, i just use my head/neck to hold the hatch up to replace struts lol

I just finished replacing the lifts on my '95. I used the SACHS SG230031/ fit perfect and seem to be working great! Thanx for the advice!

I am a noob to 318ti.org as I just acquired my first ti. This thread was very helpful. I found the Blazer struts at Advanced Auto for $19 each. One concern I have read repeatedly is whether the Blazer struts are too strong for the hatch and other hardware. So I made a video of my hatch opening so you can see for yourselves....

I can't get YouTube to work right now, but as long as you don't let the hatch "fly up" freely and slam, I doubt there ever will be a problem. I just keep my hand on the hatch
So it extends gently.

I realize you guys have had good luck so far; however they are replaced in pairs so the force on the gate is equal.

By replacing one (or only using one) you are essentially twisting the hatch every time you open it.

This puts undue stress and wear on your hinges. Sort of like opening your car door while hanging out the window- it works just fine for a while...

Anyway, do what you want; I just wanted to point this out to the newer members who don't necessarily realize that could be doing damage down the road.

I bought the Mighty Lift pair for $15.99/ea at AutoZone. $34.06 total w/tax.
The Sachs ones are available at www.rockauto.com for $14.10 each, but with shipping the total was $34.88.
Got Sacks from RockAuto, works perfectly. Thanks for saving me some money.

get one strut. They are more stiff, so if you only get one It'll support it as if you had 2 of the recommended ones.

still 18.99 from autozone for the Mighty Lift C95769.

I'll have them in 3-5 business days. Thanks for posting this I'm glad there is a cheaper solution for this problem.

I just bought a new OEM pair off of ebay for $30 and free shipping. I didn't want to take any chances and feel I got a pretty good deal.
