It's hitting one of the pulleys. Do I need to time the motor if I remove all the pulleys? Do I need to set it at TDC? __________________ Last edited by Platanos; 03-13-2011 at 06:48 PM. | | | 03-13-2011, 11:20 PM | #33 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: asdfasdf Posts: 10,002 | Quote: Originally Posted by Platanos Do I need to time the motor if I remove all the pulleys? I need some advise as to how far to tear it down. I feel like if I keep going, I'm only getting in over my head. The motor has less than 90K miles on it. It is filthy on the outside as it did leak oil. My goal was to clean and paint the block, change all the seals/gaskets. I just wanted to fresh and clean thing up. I'm guessing I should redo the cooling system. Is that basically replacing the thermostat housing? What should I do? Should I keep going and replace the head gasket for chit and giggles? I'm in need of some direction fellas!! __________________ | | | 03-13-2011, 11:34 PM | #35 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2005 Location: PA Posts: 1,906 | Quote: Originally Posted by tiFreak it should be fine as long as you don't remove a timing pulley, why remove them all if it's only hitting one? | Which is the timing pulley? I only removed the top one in the photo, with the 3 bolts. Your question is one I'm asking myself too. Not sure how far to go with breaking it down.... __________________ | | | 03-13-2011, 11:43 PM | #36 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2007 Location: LA, Bellflower, CA Posts: 3,613 | Quote: Originally Posted by Platanos Sent from my stupid incredible using Forum Runner | this is what i used to remove my S52 motor and tranny btw, is that an underdrive pulley kit on your motor? __________________ -Theta Chi- Float like a cadilac, sting like a BIMMER .... my socket is just too thick and won't fit in the hole! damnit! Yes, thats a UUC pulley set. Also has lightweight flywheel and M5 clutch. How much more involved is that? I'll look over on pelican to see if there is a write up on it. I'm just afraid to mess with the internals!! To do the HG it needs to be timed right? I don't know man, I'm feeling a little worried about being able to put everything back together. But at the same time, it would feel better knowing everything was taken care of....damn __________________ | | | 03-14-2011, 12:43 AM | #40 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2009 Location: nj Posts: 1,099 | if you not sure you could put it back together i wouldnt bother..the motor only has 90k on it if there isnt any sing of overheating and coolant isnt filtering you should be ok.. im not 100 % sure if you have to time it..im thinking you would since you gotta remove the timing gear from the exhaust cam to remove the head....if your not sure ill say leave it alone..replace the valve cover gasket/oil pan gasket/rear main seal/and the coolant seals and call it a day.. __________________ 318ti MZK2 | | | 03-14-2011, 01:09 AM | #41 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2005 Location: PA Posts: 1,906 | __________________ | | | 03-14-2011, 01:14 AM | #42 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2009 Location: nj Posts: 1,099 | nop only the intake cam has the plastic cover...not bad man.. i hate skunks.. __________________ 318ti MZK2 | | | 03-14-2011, 04:58 AM | #43 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2007 Location: Rocky Hill, CT Posts: 1,065 | yep, try to put the cam cover on the exhaust cam then mock the valve cover on, it doesn't fit I would say don't bother doing the head gasket. It's a much more involved process and ads a decent amount of money. You have to remove both cams, and need to time it when they go back in (easily done, but you need around $200 worth or tools IIRC), as well as get the vanos set right and the timing chains sitting properly. I would just do the easy seals. Oil pan, valve cover, rear main, etc. Cooling system I would definitely pick up a new t-stat and aluminum housing. Just a tip, if you're planning on repainting the motor, oven cleaner is a good cheap degreaser. I get it at the dollar store, and it's worked on parts with 30+ years of grease and road grime on em. Just do it outside/with fresh air, the fumes are nasty Only downside vs the expensive stuff is it strips paint too. __________________ 1995 318TI base. 95 2.5L from 325IS.
