Default OK / Safe to disconnect ABS / Control Module ??

My mechanic has identified a condition in which my ABS control module is malfunctioning and not communicating with the rest of the systems in the car, and therefore the transmission is locking into safe mode with both the transmission and ASC lights locked on.

I have now had my entire electrical system diagnosed, there are no bad wires or other issues, and the shop has suggested (at least temporarily since the ABS module is rather pricey) simply disconnecting the ABS module, "which means standard brakes and and no ASC, but everything else works fine, including the transmission". No shifting problems, no lockout, and no lights seems to be the result of bypassing the module...

Has anyone ever heard of or done this?

Is it really OK to do as an interim fix while I seek out a replacement module?

Thanks.

I don't see why it would be an issue. At the moment, I'm driving with the ASC system non-functional. I have a manual, so there's no TCM to put into a 'safe mode'.

thanks Zboot, well it seems to be running fine, picked up and have driven it about 30 miles so far. As long as I don't break down on the way to radiohead tonight knock on wood.

So now the search begins for a cheap rebuilt ABS module.

Good luck dude and stay safe. I'd give more space for braking especially in the rain. You're going to have to keep in mind that now, you're the only thing that would keep your fronts from locking up in a panic brake situation.

(BTW, has anyone ever managed to lock up the rear brakes?)

just to report back for others, yes there is indeed a bit of braking performance hit, at least it seems that way, but the car ran fine for 100+ miles so apparently this is not a problem as an interim fix.

Thanks for the advice.

I've got a module for you if you're interested! Check out my part-out thread.
