M5 needs a rest...

Hey guys and gals,

I started my automotive life in West Texas at 15 with the handle "Rocket Man," inheriting a 454 Chevy truck from Dad. After Mom found out what Dad's "work truck could do she sold it out from under me. First car I bought myself was a German Capri RS.

It amazed the kids in Lubbock what these two vehicles could do. The truck could blow by anything but a gas station. The Crapi could dance around any corner and stop to watch as the T/As would end up in the tumble weeds. Those two cars set the stage for me and I can safely say I've never been one to buy a "normal" car.

I've owned many Chevs, VWs, and BMWs since. I've spent over a decade hung up on E28s. I simply love them and will go back to one when the time is right. I've had an E39 M5 for a couple of years now. "The Beast" is just that and lately has been getting me into trouble-3 tickets in 4 months. ///Maintenance, ///MPG, and ///Money have lead me to search out a DD that would help out but still keep me engaged.

I've narrowed the search to either an E21 or an E36/5, and I'm leaning heavily toward the ti just so I'm in a more modern car with fewer issues. We'll see where the search takes us.

I'm active on MyE28.com and M5Board.com so it seemed a no-brainer to join here too. I hope I don't need y'all too much but look forward to getting to know the car and the people.

To the org man also good luck finding a ti they are nice little cars I own a e39 myself not a beast but a 528 just a family car I spend most of my time on my ti , they are extremely easy to work on super easy to learn either way good luck on the hunt an all the members are always here to help out

One of my first cars in high school was a 1973 Capri RS with the 2.6L V-6 motor. That thing ran like a mo-fo and was quite fast. There's only a small handful of cars I've owned that I miss and the Capri is definitely one of them.

I'm in the middle of a balancing act as every dollar I spend on a daily is a dollar I could put into the M5. But I have a good idea of what I want and how low I can get away with. We'll see what turns up.

Re: the capri, mine was a '76 mkII with the 2.3l V6 and it really surprised the firebird and camaro guys back then. I think that's one of the things I like about BMWs too- the whole Q-ship thing. Except for the Hamman wing I have out back I could be driving a Taurus instead of a 398hp four door super car. And I just love the idea of a BMW hatchback too.

Whatever I end up with will stay stock for a while so my Long Cool Woman (the M5 not the wife) can be pampered a bit. (Wife is always pampered.) I learn fast and am pretty good with wrenches so I'll be helping wherever I can too.

We just got back from a run down to Austin then back up to College Station, first getting hoodwinked by "Uncle Gary" then others that put their car up for sale and refuse to make contact with cash buyers. First time I've ever been stood up when paying cash for anything.

At least we had a nice dinner with son William and his fiance' in Bryan. Steak makes all things good.

The '00 Z is my wife's "garage queen"- sad to say the interior has gone south so lately it's more garage than queen. But that should be fixed over the next year or so. The Taurus is our daughter's car and the horse hauler in the background is Cindy's current DD, an '04 8.1L 2500HD.

So anyway, you can see our need for a little fuel economy.

LOL! I really REALLY hated that thing when I bought the car(got a great deal though) but it's grown on me. I'm planning to add the Hamann front lip and diffuser too at some point to complete the set, with maybe some DTM exhaust tips. I thought about going widebody but that's just too extreme for me.

We picked this up in Plainview Tx. on Monday:





The car was nice and shiny on the outside. It does have some rough spots though and came with a heavy layer of West Texas dust in the engine bay so gimme a bit before I post up better pics. It's certainly not a perfect example, but it's pretty much what I was looking for. Funny thing is since the purchase I have had three outstanding offers to sell (a local 318ti with a lot of work done to it, a top notch blk/blk 535is but w/o A/C, and a fully restored E21). My A.D.D. may have got the better of me but this car will fit right in here.
