Default N62B44 swap... possible? or no?

So, to get right down to it. Someone I know is parting out their written off 2004 X5, and I can get the whole engine and everything off of him for pretty cheap so I was wondering if this is even feasible or not. If it is, I realize it's not a direct bolt in like a powerplant out of another e36. But assuming it is possible, any suggestions as to how I'd get around to doing this?

Thanks in advance.

do it! with enough time research and money i've found anything can be put into these cars. the only thing i can think of is that you may have to modify the firewall. i think the guys that put in the LS1 engine had to do that? don't quote me on that, but i thaught he did?

You'd have to start by clearing the engine bay. Then doing a trial fit, If I was attacking this I'd take the front off the car (IE fenders hood and look at a space frame front end, just to allow the power transfer to the chassis. I'd tie it into a 6point+ cage that would get tied to a under frame reinforcement linked front to rear. (See Mustang convertible reinforcement for fox body) But if I was doing this its because I wanted a cool track car more than a daily driver...

xxxJohnBoyxxx: That youtube video is where i got the idea, and although i believe it isnt stock, it doesnt show anything to prove its legitimate either, and im skeptical at best.

bmorekirby: I really do want to, and I'm slowly working on aquiring the resources TO do it, and my baby steps are starting to look like they are paying off. And I completely agree with the notion that anything can be put into these things, there are a few members on here that stand testiment to that.

pdxmotorhead: Thank you, I appreciate the direction, and ideas. But thats some work I'd like to leave as a last option kind of thing, I was just hoping someone has heard/ seen/ done something like this, personally that is, minus the one youtube vid mentioned above, but if it comes down to it, thats what ill have to do. And it's going to be a pleasure vehicle, as well as a track car, so itll see some track action, but some street time on the side here and there as well.

Didnt alpina or hartge make a couple of e36s like this? Anyways, ls1s dont require firewall modifications and i doubt the 4.4 will either. Get on bimmerforums, e36 forum, and find the 344i thread. Complete build thread on a vert.

Yes alpina did, The b8 4.8. They had to make a custom oil pan as the v8's stock oilpan interferes with the front subframe.
