Is there anyway to get a 3rd party one that would work or and old one and program it for my car? | | | 03-02-2009, 02:38 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Elizabeth City, NC Posts: 3,877 | __________________ ~Dave~ 98 328ti Morea Grun slicktop 11 128i space gray slicktop 13 JGC WK2 Deep Cherry Search | RealOEM | | | 03-02-2009, 04:45 AM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2008 Location: North Carolina Posts: 190 | Those threads dont help, the first is about remotes on ebay, and the second is how to program the remotes. I have been wanting to know this also, I have searched all over this website many times with no luck. They have alarms/remote locks at best buy(200$) and even autozone(~50), that I would love to know if they will work. The one at autozone for 50 dollars says that it is easy installation and will work with 'most' cars. Anyone know if it will work? If not I would end up getting a nice kit from best buy and have them instal for me... | | | 03-02-2009, 05:12 AM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Elizabeth City, NC Posts: 3,877 | They do help if you have the factory alarm installed and just need to get a remote. They are on ebay for cheap, I posted the install instructions to show him how to program it, which is what he asked for. __________________ ~Dave~ 98 328ti Morea Grun slicktop 11 128i space gray slicktop 13 JGC WK2 Deep Cherry Search | RealOEM | | | 03-02-2009, 05:32 AM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2008 Location: North Carolina Posts: 190 | Oh sorry, I thought they were talking about replacement remotes. I dont understand why a car would come with a alarm but no remotes? Anyways I dont think my car has the alarm, anyone know if those aftermarket systems would work? sorry to thread jack | | | 03-02-2009, 06:55 AM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2007 Location: Denver, Colorado Posts: 3,212 | It's better to get a stock alarm from someone parting out the alarm. I paid around $100 for one and installed it myself. Pretty easy to do took me about an hour or so. | | | 03-02-2009, 09:16 AM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2007 Location: norcal - 94590 Posts: 3,186 | Quote: Originally Posted by lysergicsurfer Oh sorry, I thought they were talking about replacement remotes. Anyways I dont think my car has the alarm, anyone know if those aftermarket systems would work? sorry to thread jack | IIRC, all our cars came pre-wired for alarms, making very easy to add an OEM or aftermarket unit. Pelicanparts.com carries a couple PNP aftermarket systems from Stellar that start under $200. Sometimes the car may have had an alarm installed, but the remote was lost when it was sold/changed hands... It is getting more difficult to find a factory remote for these cars without having to go to the dealer and paying well over $100 for the remote alone, and when you can get an aftermarket set-up for less, it seems to not be very cost effective... Also, many newer aftermarket systems have features that the OEM units don't have (shock sensors, remote paging systems, cell phone access, etc.) that you may want now I personally wouldn't buy a DIY system from a parts store, as alarms can be tricky to install... the advantage to having Best Buy (or some other major retailer) install it, is that they usually warranty their work, so you can go back to them if there is a problem... I ended up buying a remote from ebay for my car (the original was lost), and it works fine... The choice is up to you and your budget. __________________ James 95 active w/leather interior and sport interior conversion, Vaders, full M-Tech exterior conversion.
