Default Oil Filter Housings

I understand there are at least two versions of the M42/44 oil filter housings.

First of course there is the aluminum capped version from early m42, and then the late m42 (E36) with plastic cap and then the M44 version. Are the late m42 style passing filtered oil to the timing chain like the M44 ones or is it only the M44 ones that do so?

I do not see why it would be different other than the cap and that oil filter housing bush in the M44s.
