Default Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor

I have been troubleshooting a high idle issue for about a week now. I Recently purchased a 95 TI and had to replace the wiring harness. Today I finally decided to explore the option of the ECT causing my idle issues as my idle issues are worse upon a cold start. There are two sensors, one at the front of the head (blue) and one just behind it about the middle of the head (black).

From what I understand the blue one sends a signal to the temperature gauge and the black one sends a signal to the DME. When I replaced the wiring harness I assumed that the plug with blue in it went to the blue ECT and the one with black goes to the black ECT. This morning I decided to swap the plugs and see if I noticed a difference and I did. My idle seems to be normal now. Does this sound normal. Can anyone provide some insight on this?

Yes, its normal, but at the same time, how does the temperature guage act? If it is irratic, in a sense that, when you are driving, it could be at temp, then it goes up, then drops back down, you have it plugged into the wrong sensor, if the temp sensor follows correctly, cold to middle, and stays, then you have figured out your issue.

Think you got it. I told you to change your t-stat in another post since your temp gauge was erratic and I assumed the T-stat was sticking open. Now that you changed the harness plugs and things are normal I think that was the only issue. T-stat is most likely good too...

Glad you got is solved.

Best, John S

Yeah I ended up changing the t-stat which was good just as a preventative, but I still had the issues which prompted me to look at the ect. Thanks for everyones help.

Glad to have it fixed.
