Default auto 318ti engine swap

i have a 1996 318ti auto with a m44b19 what kinda engine can i swap on this for some performance, do i need to change the transmission? i just want performance keeping it auto for now.. i was thinking a m3 engine has this been done to a ti? m3 auto ti?

If you're serious about doing a swap, you're going to need to familiarize yourself with this section:

I personally know of 7 swapped Ti's in California alone. I'm sure there's more than that, but those are just a few here in Cali that I know of.

did they diy ? or go to a shop? i live in sf any shop in cali would do it?

Did you mean San Fernando or San Francisco? If San Fernando, the "M Shop" in Eagle Rock can do your swap and unfortunately I do not know a place in San Francisco.
