Default Acess to engine coolant sensor

My 1995 318t1, M42 engine coolant temp sensor is working intermittantly. I have ordered a new sensor to replace it.

My Haynes Tech Manual indicates that you can access it without any interference removals; however, I can barely see it.

It appears that the intake manifold needs to be removed to gain access to the coolant temp sensor which is the second sensor back (toward the rear of the car).

Removing the intake manifold looks like a challange. Can the manifold be removed in 1 piece or do you remove the upper halve to access the bolts to remove the lower halve? Do you have to remove the fuel rail to remove the manifold?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Did you ever figure this out? Seems this post went out 4 years ago. I have the same issue and am interested in the answer.

Thanks,
Paul
