Default Check Engine Light

My check engine light came on yesterday. I haven't done anything to the car to make it come on. I alredy checked my oil, coolant, mass airflow sensor and any other common thing that I could think of. Could this be because it's time for a service? If so, does any one know the easy way to reset the computer without the tool?

Mine was set off by an o2 Sensor/bad cat. So I just replaced everything. It's probably just the easiest to go to a shop and have them check it out. Unless you have a code reader

Most likely an O2 Sensor.

Try checking your gas cap and make sure it's closed tightly.
Sometimes the vacuum (or non vacuum in this case) inside the gas tank triggers a sensor to make the check engine light to come on. Happened once before.
If that checks out, check O2 sensors.

Mine went off a month ago for the first time. When I had the codes checked at the dealership, it was for two reasons, one was the gas cap was not tight.

It may be as simple as that, but you still need to somehow reset the code.

I thought it might have been because I am overdue for a service. But thanks fellows (maybe fellowettes) for the advice. I'll check it out in the morning. It's already almost midnight here.

CEL's on german cars(at least VW and BMW) seem to be pointless. Personally I wouldn't worry until it's a flashing. Of course make sure you know what is setting the light off right away. I drove with a bad cat/O2 Sensor for over a year and the ride is fine.....I think jk lol

Default CEL

one follow up on this. If it is the gas cap (which I'm sure it was-cause it was loose) will the light reset or do you need to get that done at a garage?

Default Spend Money Light CEL

I just spent too much money having the spend money light (CEL) resolved. There were 2 problems, one was the cam position sensor and the second was a failed secondary air pump. I have noticed if you adjust the fuel cap after you fill up the tank the light usually goes out, and will stay off if the cap is secure. The code has not been reset, but the light is off.

The CEL deals mostly with emissions related items, but can affect the overall performance of the car, eventually.
