Once the car has been driven even a mile, it slides in just fine. Obviously, the gears are getting lubed as the car warms up. I never had this trouble before this recent fluid change so that is what baffles me. The tranny itself only has about 10K miles on it, having been replaced last year (due to the dreaded "popping out of gear" problem). The transmisson is the Getrag S5D 250 in a 96 ti. Fluid used is the recommended Dexron ATF fluid. Is this a viscosity issue with the fluid? Not enough fluid? It can't be the tranny... it just can't be. Any help or ideas are appreciated. | | | 02-25-2002, 04:24 PM | #2 | Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Annapolis, MD Posts: 78 | The same thing happened to me - make sure that the res. is full - you should be able to stick your pinky in and feel the fluid right under the plug hole. After driving, the fluid works it's way around and you might not have added as much as you needed. I ended up adding an additional 1/8- 1/4 of a bottle after driving a mile or two. ------------------ Dan B. I'll check it and top it up. | | | 02-25-2002, 06:40 PM | #4 | Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Saint Paul, MN, USA Posts: 47 | By the way, Dan.... what kind of fluid did you put in your tranny? Someone has suggested that it is a difference between synthetic gear oil and mineral... Maybe the synth. has lower viscosity and lubes stays slippery even when cold. I am not sure what was put in this gearbox when it was replaced. I'll have to dig in my receipts. | | | 02-25-2002, 09:16 PM | #5 | Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Annapolis, MD Posts: 78 | I'm in the process of changing my fluids over to synthetic - so far I've done the tranny. Next up is the LSD. I'm using Lubro Moly for the Tranny and Redline for the LSD. ------------------ Dan B. Shifted nicely. This recent service probably got the mineral stuff and I really notice the difference, especially on the cold mornings. I'll get back to synthetic before I do any damage. | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
