In my case, there was glue on around the perimeter of each speaker it seemed. I would have preferred to break the glue bond and twist them off. They were glued on not intended to not be separated. Was yours only spot glued at the tabs?

It would have saved me 30 minutes by the time I had to dig out the Dremel, find the right tip and cut them out. Cutting them out only took 5 minutes a side once I got set up.

Miniz guy, I like your E39 reference site. I have a few write-ups for my 540i, not as cool as you and your friends.

Reinstalled the speakers among other things today. It passed the Wifie test as she liked them and considering it's her future TI, we have a win.

I have a pair of 5 1/4 speaker adapters somewhere. If I can find them, I may do the same for my 97 with the same manufacturer, but in a 5 1/4" midrange similar to this install.

Here's a link to a site in the UK for speaker adapters. 130mm looks to be equal to 5 1/4. Where did I put mine?

Thanks, if you want to do any video DIY's, we'd love to have your content.

Mine was glued all around. I just took a jeweler's toolkit and took the smallest flat blade to pry away the surround to break the glue. Took me 10 minutes total to get the perimeter free. Then I took the same flat blade and hammer to rotate the speaker around.

I finally did this replacement today. I used JVC CSV418 speakers that were $16 off Amazon. Bent the mounting tabs and used the supplied hardware to install the speakers onto the original bases. Didn't take any pictures of something so minor and I just wanted to test them out. No more crackling speakers!

Bought another pair of the Dayton Midbass speakers for the 98 Sport as the rears are blown. The 98 is slowly coming together as I finish up my wife's ti.

Took a few moments to disassemble another set of rear speakers for the 98 Sport. I decided to use another set of 4" Dayton mid-bass speakers as replacements. This time I did separate the old speaker from the mount.

Separating the first one took about 30 minutes, the second one took about 15 minutes. Broke a few blades in the process.

I'll have to figure out how I want to mount the replacement speaker as there is not as much material without the speaker ring in place. I'll Dremmel some material off so the speaker can set lower and sit in the lock tabs.

Tomorrow will do.

I read the two threads regarding the replacement of the rear speakers. Lots of great info. I obviously did something wrong with my modification since I'm using larger speakers, but I'm hoping someone might have some tips for me to correct.

I purchased this 2 way component speaker system:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...productDetails

I was able to remove my old speakers and using brackets was able to install the new mid-range speakers. Here are some pics:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...-speaker-1.JPG

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...-speaker-2.JPG

1) As you can see, there is space between the new larger speaker cone and the black plastic piece that I will affix to the panelling of the car. I'm assuming I need to cover/fill that space somehow. Any ideas on a product to use there?

I picked up a pair of 5.25 adapters from the U.K that If I can ever find I will use on my car, but they are sized to accept the larger speaker in the ti speaker housing. Check ebay.co.uk if you want to go that route, but I suspect you want more quicker results.

I did see a few mentions for that adapter from the UK. Unfortunately, I'm not in a position to wait and I was hoping I could fill that gap somehow. Might look into plumbing supplies and/or silicone. Baby is on the way. Need to finish up a few projects on the old ti. For a 1998, it's running very well. Just need to attend to the cosmetic details and definitely get the radio working again.

Totally understand. OK, what about foam door weather seal from like a home depot. The sell it in rolls of various thickness and they are self adhering on one side. you could attach it to the side of the stock cone so it wouldn't impede the speaker travel. Would that work for your need to fill the gap?

I will stop by the hardware stores this weekend and look at some products like that. Thank you very much. It's been so long since I pulled my panels and speakers. There are only two wires for each side of the side panels, right? I'll look again tonight. I'm assuming the original 318ti speakers in the rear have the crossover component within the speaker, so my new speaker setup should do the same thing, one set of wires come in to the speaker component system and from there it directs to the mid-range and tweeter.

In mine ('95 with the 10-speaker system) the crossover is in the amp. So there are separate wires going from the amp to the two speakers.

I took some pics of the wires for the rear speakers.

Passenger side:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...right-side.JPG

Drivers side:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...-left-side.JPG

So, I suppose I do have an amp that is handling the crossover for a tweeter and a mid-range speaker and I do have ten speaker setup. In the pictures I wrote a note on the tape that reads (black: main speakers) and (white: tweeters). I will double check this in the Bentley and online and will update this post when the project is done.

I'm currently trying to find the ohm requirements for each of the ten speakers. I'm thinking the speakers that I purchased are not compatible due to the ohm settings. From what I'm reading, you want to match OHM rated speakers to the AMP in the same way as the stock configuration.
